OK Mike,here goes
In a 20ga Fed hull, does the Claybuster waa20 7/8 oz wad fit/function well with Universal powder? Neither Claybuster or Hodgdon could tell me. |

In MY opinion, No, the Federal hull is straight and the AA wad is tapered.
You may or not get poor ignition because of this.
Plus you can not fit it all in, the AAF1 wad is better in this volumn.
I do sometimes do this in the HOT summer time but not in the cooler temps and both sets are marginal.
Never for hunting as it takes too much effort to have a blooper. Skeet is different on TUESDAYS as we do not keep score
Hope this helps
Mike
p.a.
Having said all that, Hodgdon does have these loads for the Federal hull
Universal Win. 209 WAA20 17.0 9,300 PSI 1,200
Universal Win. 209 WAA20 17.5 9,900 PSI 1,225
Universal Win. 209 WAA20 18.0 0,200 PSI 1,250

What Mike said.
However I will say this, a lot of folks do load the CB078 20ga wad in the Fed hulls and they work fine. I've shot a couple flats of it I loaded up, and got consistent speeds and standard deviations. Somewhere I posted up the chrono tests, around 1230 I think for what I loaded. But like Mike said, the smaller diam taper hull powder cup on the CB1078-20 isn't the very best fit in those hulls, if you keep them and rattle them around you can get powder migration. If I was just going to load some up to use components I had (CB1078-20, Universal, Fed hulls) and shoot practice clays, I'd have absolutely no worries about it though, and use the Hodgdon recipes from their website Mike listed.
The best wad to use with straight wall 20ga hulls, IMO, is the SG-20M wad from Gualandi. BPI sells them in Short, Mid, and Long length, but I think the mid work best for 7/8oz with Fiocchi and cheddite hulls. Not a lot of recipes from BPI for Fed hulls, none for Universal listed... here's the loadsheet if you're interested for other straight wall hulls you may use (Rio, Cheddite, Fiocchi)
https://www.ballisticproducts.com/images/ld20sg20M.pdf
The SG20 line is the same price as the Fed 20S1 though, so if you have a recipe using the Fed wad, might as well buy that. Unfortunately you can get twice as many wads in the CB line as the SG or Fed wads, so a lot of guys including me use the CB wads. I'm in Phx using large grain powder though, GreenDot and Unique. |

We do discuss over bored 20's here, really over bored. But they mostly require purple hulls. |

If you take a 20 and add it to a 12, they average 2 16s. |

After talking it over with DE and Skeetx, I've decided(rationalized) the expense of the Fed wad by 1) People gave me hundreds of the pre aluminum head hulls so no expense there2) I can always use them in 16 ga RGL's which I've had great 7/8oz loads. However no one has any locally so I'll have to mail order some, probably from recobs. Thanks to all |

BPI has the Fed 20S1 wads for like $10/250. $5 shipping right now also, use SHIP5 as the code. |

Carl,
Go to Shotgun World’s Reloading forum. Special sticky on straight walled 20s. Get some Gualandi wads from Ballistic Products and go to town. They are on sale several times a year.

Gentlemen,
Carry and shoot what you most like, I have a 20 gauge Hammer Gun that is just deadly beyond belief, with SpredR shells, 7 1/2 or 8. I do not need to load any more shells, now that RST and Poly are making SpredR shells even in 2 1/2 for my old J.P Sauer and Elsie guns.
Got to tell ya however the 20 is a might light for early Grouse hunting in Pa, the habitat is seriously thick for a 20 or 28, the 16 gets the call most of the time. Even the 12 on certain moutains that are extremely thick, until the leaves start to fall.
Pine Creek/Dave
It's hard to beat a nice light LeFever built on a 16 gauge Frame, when it has a slightly modified Brown Rotary Bolt, Krupp Barrels and swings like an extension of your arm. The Engraving and the Oak Leaf Checkering are pretty nice also.

I am guessing that is one of the DM Lefevers from 1904-1906. |

From all appearances, it looks to be an Ithaca Nitro Special with aftermarket work. |
