I have a similar issue. I'll be deciding between a 2.5" cyl/full choked damascus Lefever 12 with RST 1 oz 6's, or a 2.75"ic/xf 16 with 1 1/8oz 6's and/or 5's. Good problems to have. I've shot four turkeys, and none of them past 30 yards, so I don't think long range effectiveness is really much of an issue, in my experience at least. |

there are some little tricks you can try to tighten down even your regular loads . one of them is our Skeetx's tape trick . I've found it can noticeably tighten some loads . A wrap or 2 of scotch tape around the lower end of the shotcup on the outside has gotten a 1/2 choke tighter when I tried it . Turkey loads are way over rated unless you like PAIN . Try sitting and leaning against a tree and touching off a 3.5" 870 - may take a day or 2 to remember what happened !!

That's really interesting. The tape goes on the outside of the hull? I may try this.
Thank you,
Cliff |

Wad not hull
This retards the opening of the shot cup a tad bit

Thanks, that's what I thought but I wasn't clear on it when he said "outside" of the shot cup. Sorry, I've never reloaded for shotguns before. That's changing. |

To kill a turkey one has to hit them with sufficient number of pellets In the head and neck only...
20+ pellets in head and neck does the trick nicely.
#9 shot @ 1400 fps will take birds at 50+ yards with proper pellet density.
Been there done that so many times I do not have to guess about any of the sort .
I do not shoot birds in strut .... Hard to kill at distance.
Way too much guessing goes on , with the slide rules coming out .
5/8 oz of #9's at 1470 fps in guns with .016 or greater has taken a while bunch of birds for myself and those I have taken with me .
This spring I will shoot my stand by load of 3/4 oz @ 1400 fps of course #9's. That is all I ever buy anymore since 2007.
I will post pictures of my Gobblers this spring.
Gil one of these days I would love to visit with you on your loads.
Best Regards. Nick |

Gentlemen,
IMO you guys are making to much of this Turkey Shooting. My 1st Turkey was taken with a 20 Gauge Savage DL Full Choke Turkey/Fox gun, with #6"s, at less than 30 yards. I was 14 years old. Being a woodsman is 3/4 of the Game.
This is not Rocket Science gentlemen.

Wyo , he uses std 9 shot and at those speeds , he has killed a bunch of stuff - everything ! we've talked about the heavy stuff , but sort of decided the extra expense wasn't worth it . It would be great if you could get some hevi 13 at the price Rotometals gets for Bizz !! |

A truly talented woodsman can get the job done by whirling a potato in a sock! |

Your letting my secrets out now. , Not allowed , smiling.
Regards , Nick
I also used to use broomsticks to kill squirrel and barbwire to twist out rabbits . So killing a turkey with a shotgun is not much of a trick...
