Instead of finishing wood cutting for the year or placing turkey tents today, I'm looking at 6 inches of snow with more on the way!

Not wasting the morning I was up at 5 and loaded up a bunch of 3/4 ounce 16 gauge loads and had plenty of time to process some idle thoughts.

Both my father and father in law have some interesting names for guns.

The gun that started it all for me is my fathers first shotgun, a bolt action 16 gauge Savage. He bought that gun new for $25 and killed plenty of deer with with it until he picked up a Model 25 Winchester in that other gauge. Looking back he always referred to the Savage as, "THE BOLT". As in, " Did you clean THE BOLT after you used it?".

Along with this the Model 25 Winchester was always referenced as "THE 25". As in "THE 25 can really pitch a slug."

My Father-in law has 2 rifles, a 30/30 Marlin and a Remington 7400 in 270. He referred to the 30/30 as "THE UP NORTH GUN". As in, " I just took a shot at the range with the UP NORTH GUN and it the scope is still on."

The Remington 7400 in 270 is always referenced as "THE OUT WEST GUN". As in, "I don't have a shot at the cabin long enough to worry about using THE OUT WEST GUN."

Yes I have a bit of Cabin fever.

I always joke with my buddy and call his Remington Nitro Mags, "Neutron Obliterators".

My Fox 16 is named Mary......named for an elephant that was hung in Tennessee, the year the gun was made.

I thought the poor elephant needed some remberance.

I named my old Remington Model 11 "The Great Emancipator." He set a lot of pheasant souls free.

I never really thought about naming guns but a couple have acquired monikers over the years. I like to take a walk with Thomas every now and then. That's a Thomas Bland 2 1/2" 12 bore.

I also take the Colonel moose hunting every year. That one is a left handed model 70 in 400 Whelen.

I’d never heard that story, and after researching it, I wish I hadn’t. Hard to see how “humane” comes from humans.

It is hard to state this on the 16-gauge site, but my 1914 vintage, 12-gauge, Ansley H. Fox A-Grade with straight grip stock and 28-inch 3-weight Krupp barrels, has been my go to Pheasant gun since I got it in time for the 1966 season. It has earned the name "Meat-in-the-Pot".

I've never named a gun, but the only one I've threatened to name is my Parker single barrel trap that somebody chopped 7" off of long before it came my way. Nobody wanted that orphan until I finally gave it a home, so she's casually referred to as Annie...Orphan Annie.

Have never given any of my dozen or more 16 ga. shotguns a name, but have referred to my .358 Savage 99 as " old deer dorker" occasionally !

Very few 400 Whelens were ever chambered, do know if yours was rebored or rebarreled?

Skeettx; you want some snow, between Tuesday the 3rd and the last four days we got over 30" to go on top of what we already had.
