Hhhmmm, Iíve been thinking.
Dangerous, I tell ya.
So Iíve been looking for a new shooting iron to be used on some light thin skinned southern pine goats this fall and Iím at a crossroad of sorts and then ďITĒ came to me and I then asked myself...and now I ask you.

What is the 16 ga of the rifle world?

Meaning, limited commercial ammo choices, limited manufacturers, a middleweight, something that isnít offered in every sporting good store, has a dedicated following and somewhat cult status, not everyone has one and is sorta like everyone here on this website😎

12ís and 20ís are everywhere but only the special chosen ones hunt 16ís

7 x 57 Mauser. Jack O'connor had nothing but good to say about them. I had a Ruger 77 in that caliber that I gave to my Great Grandaughter. She has shot several deer with it.

.348 winchester 71. But too much for your goats, unless you down load using a cast bullet @ ~ 1500 fps.

Savage 99 in .250 or .300 Sav, maybe .358 Winchester. That last caliber is hard to find, the other two are more like the gauge-common enough but not a lot of people looking for them to use as a primary arm.

The 300 H&H and 35 Whelen come to mind.

Easy .270 Winchester just like the 16 it acts bigger than the numbers indicate.

6.5x55 Swedish. Accurate, low recoil and deadly. In Sweden it is the most common caliber and they use it on moose.

2nd vote for the .270, kills everything without over doing it or leaving you feeling under gunned.

Those are all far too common- to really qualify it needs to be something that was once popular but is now obscure. That leaves two, one small bore, one large bore: 6.5x54MS & .404 Rimless Nitro Express aka Jeffery.

How about the 256 Mannlicher (6.5x53 Rimmed). Rifle of choice for explorer Charles Sheldon. That's really getting obscure.

I vote for the 270 as first choice and 6.5 X 55 second. Availability for the 6.5 is spotty depending where you are and like the 16 load selection is slim. But either are deadly.
