I thought my .32-20 was a good example. I am toying with purchasing both a modern Marlin/Browning level action and a Savage Mod 32C bolt action versions to go with my 2 revolvers.

There are so many calibers that would qualify, but this is of course, just a matter of opinion.

I have two candidates:

1. for heavier game, the 30/40 Krag.

2. for most game up to Elk, the 250/3000 Savage.

I have both, and have enjoyed them over the years.

Mike, very unusual, but the 30/06 is the 12 gauge of the rifle world. Your over/under sure qualifies as unusual, at least here in the states. Wink

I 2nd the 7x57.

Several reasons:
1) almost ignored in new production rifles
2) limited modern ammo choices almost a reloading proposition
3) gets the job done better than a host of modern chamberings
4) rich in history
5) all the intelligent guys use it!

I thought maybe 32-20 (have one) but the real answer:

30/30 is the 16ga of the rifle world. Universally popular for decades, everyone had one. Then poof, magnum everything. Another poof and here come the fast varmint rounds and AR format guns. Just like 16s vs. magnum 12x3.5 vs. light 20s.

Yep, poor old 30/30 is the 16ga of rifles...

My vote goes to the 280 Ackley Improved, as it is the all around North American big game round that just flat gets the job done. The 280 AI is to big game as the 16 ga is to upland bird hunting. Both are a little bit on the fringe of acceptance, but garner respect from knowledgeable sportsmen.

Interesting choice. I have a Savage 23 C 32-20 with a 1.5 to 4 Weaver and have used it on deer.. Need to be careful and works best using P.O. Ackley's load data for Rifles. However, you need to pay careful attention to bullet placement and be ready to take a pass on an iffy shot. Not suitable for every man like to 16 so maybe not a good choice.

I also vote for the 6.5x55 swede, like the 16 ga I reload for it to save money.

I'll 3rd the 7x57. Excellent and more than adequate with a strong European presence like the 16.

In a deer hunting context:

.410 squirt gun
28 ga. .243 Win
20 Ga. 25-06
16 ga. 7x57
12 ga. 30-06

I toss the 9.3x62 Mauser.

It can be loaded to hits like a .375 H&H but carries like a .30-06

Last year I picked up a Lipsey's exclusive Ruger M77 Hawkeye African .275 Rigby. I hope one of these days the Ruger builds the same rifle in 9.3x62 Mauser making for the perfect pair for that dream trip to Africa.

Here are my votes and I own all four of these.
250 Savage. Great small deer and varmint round
257 ROBERTS. All around up to elk.
6.5x55 Swede. Same as above but lots of moose meat on the table in Europe from this old round.
7x57 Mauser. My favorite of these four. Can and has killed about everything on the planet without all the recoil of the magnums. There are not a lot of new rifles out there unless you are comfortable spending a lot of money but you can still find a Ruger 77 and No 1, Remington 700 Classic and Winchester Model 70 Featherweight on the used rack at a decent price. My favorite right now is a No 1 RSI with a Leupold 2x7 scope.
I'm a 2.5" 16 ga and. 7x57 guy and you could do a lot worse.

Bill,

The 9.3x62 Ruger African was a regular catalogue item for several years but was dropped a while back. I've been hunting for one on the secondary market for some time now. https://www.impactguns.com/ruger-m77-hawkeye-african-93x62-23in-satin-blue-37113-736676371136.aspx

If they release one in the Lipsey's exclusives like your .275, I'll be picking one up.

Marc
