As part of the annual hunter education instructors in-service training we had a clays shoot. The shooter stood at the edge of a drop-off at the edge of a valley. There was a rise on both sides of the shooter. There were three throwers: one to the left, another to the right, both behind the rises. the third was directly behind the shooter. On shooter command the left one threw a clay slightly above eye level and angling 8 o'clock to 1. then on command the trap behind the shooter sent one 6 to 12 about 20 feet overhead. On report of the shot the third one sent a clay lower in the valley 3 to 9 about 30 yards in front of shooter. I don't know if that pattern has a name, but it was quite interesting and clanging. After I shot I got to run the second thrower. I noticed another thing. All sorts of shotguns were being used, from 12 ga down to 28s. Also, most of the self-loaders must have been set-up for field loads because at least half of them failed to operate properly with the light loads. Reminded me why I shoot SxS and OUs. With regard to the clays, I suppose the arrangement was based on the land. Do you guys shoot any unique arrangements?

Prior to the hunting seasons (late August) my hunting buddies and I set up a 4 traps and shoot targets at many different angles, both comping and going. Lots of fun.

American Meat,

For years we have had interesting clays set ups, for teaching Grouse gunning, had a Corp Membership to Nemacolin Woodland Shooting Academy where I taught my clients and other NRA members Grouse gunning techniques, especially true double gunning on a course set up thru the woods.

I still teach a lot of Grouse Gunning to the NRA men and ladies. My small business at the Pine Creek Log Cabin still has a teaching set up, on our own land in Potter/Tioga, Pa, where we teach advanced gunning techniques strictly for Grouse hunting. Along with how to choose a quality shotgun to pass down thru the family.

This includes everything from the Shotguns used, especially the Classic Double Guns, Shotgun Safety while Grouse hunting, how to set up for making a good Grouse shot, how to safely carry a shotgun in the woods while Grouse hunting, different shells choices, clothing and how to choose a good Grouse hunting partner.

Further instruction is also given on how to pattern a shotgun, along with proper shells choice, for individual shotguns.

Military Veterans and their Spouses receive no charge from my small business and are welcome to stay at the Log Cabin as time permits, to learn to Grouse Hunt and Fly Fish.

Pine Creek/Dave

....Bet it'd be fun with a pump and four shells all on report and you choose when to use your extra when you miss.

You left out Little Miss SureShot, Annie...otherwise, that is a good lineup of top shots.

A skeet field will do most all the teaching necessary for actual gamebirds, if used creatively, and at a reasonable cost in time and money.
However, introducing trees or grapevines, poor footing, drop-offs and charging critters will make sales...more easily swallered.

TramRoad,

I will go back and add Annie's name to the Master Instructors List.

Thank you for the reminder.

Not true to the OP regarding field arrangement but more of a game rearrangement as Skeettx mentioned. By and large a low gun affair.

Close - for reasons of bird hunting practice I shoot it most on skeet field but works on any of the fields. Traditional line of skeet (or xxx) presents but the shooter doesn't call for the bird... once the gun closes its up to the puller when, within reason, to send the bird.... not knowing if the bird is going immediately or within several seconds keeps you on your toes.

Dealers Choice - same as Close but can be any combination/present the puller chooses.

Its a frustrating blast, akin to bird hunting, for the shooter and the pullers enjoy it as well since it brings them into the game. Actually more fun when your bud pulls for you, can really mess (F) with your mojo, again, akin to bird hunting.

Fun stuff....

This one has always had me curious...

A round of 25 targets, 12 pairs and a final single, is finished in just under 2 minutes.

To shoot that Argentina game you would definitely want a gun with ejectors to get the empty hulls out of the way for your reload! An autoloader would be much more friendly to the game.
Of course then we would have to pick up all of those coveted empty hulls to reload Crying or Very sad
