I have been fascinated by German combo guns for a few years. I bought a Blaser ES67 a little while back and love it. I have had an eye out for a reasonably priced Sauer drilling for a long time. I kinda wanted a project gun. Something not too far gone, but honest use was fine. The below fell into my life and so far I am excited.

Its a 16x16 on top choked half and full. The rifle is 7x65R. I think it should do nicely on deer and moose. Scope is a claw-mount Hensolt 1.5-6 and it seems clear. I have yet to shoot it. It needs a really good cleaning and going over.

So, for you drilling folks, I have a couple questions. Near as I can figure, it is a Sauer 3000 and appears to be a luxus model (judging by the engraving and wood). If anyone could confirm and/or estimate the age of it, I would appreciate it. I am guessing it as a 1960's vintage. The serial number is in the 900 thousand range.

Lots of pics...

Take a look at the proof marks

http://www.shotguns.se/html/west_germany.html

The leaf is the Eckernförde proof house, after 1952 Eckernförde was a part of the Kiel proofhouse. The stamp changed somewhat 1952 and can be used after 1952 until 1968.

Thank you Mike. It would appear it is from 1952-1968. Pretty wide range. I could probably narrow it down based on the 960000 serial number.

Welcome to the wonderful world of drillings.

The date will be stamped on the barrels near the breech. It will be in 3 or 4 numerals, the last two being the year and the first one or 2 the month.

Near as I can see, there is a 60 stamped near the breech. I am going to assume it’s a 1960.

On a side note, it went for an ultrasonic bath today and it came out sparkling like a piece of jewellery. I re-cut the chechering today as well. It brought back some of the grain and cleared out the years of grime.

Yes, Greener safety. The scope is a Hensoldt Wetzlar "Diavari" 1.5-6 power. Mounts are typical "tip forward" claw mounts.

Clean is a whistle now!

Well, a little update...I completely cleaned the drilling, gave it a good inspection, lubed it up and re assembled it. I rust blued the barrels and added some length to the stock and fitted a new pad. I decided I just couldn't match the wood, so I put a divider in instead of trying to graft on the new wood. I know some people hate the "white line" before the pad, but the pistol grip had it, so I added that too.

Here it is in "bird mode"

I weighed it this morning and was surprised to see it is 7lbs 11oz with scope and 6lbs 6oz without. the 26" barrels balance well for me and I am looking forward to using it this fall.

Take it out for your local version of a "McNabb"

By the way, John Buchan who wrote a novel about the original McNabb was a Governor General of Canada in the late 30's.

Nice gun. I love Drillings. I don't have one at present. (Only several O/U combos)

Could pass as a twin to the Meffert drilling I had.
