Hi there friends, It certainly has been a while since I checked in here. I sort of vanished after returning from a couple weeks of visiting a dear old friend in Minnesota back in June. The fishing was great as always. He called yesterday to ask if I know whether I will be up to North Dakota for the crane opener; hunting season is sneaking up quickly. Rusty dog and I are more than eager to alleviate feather withdrawal!
Anyway, I have wanted to basically disappear to the mountains this summer and was able to do just that. Camping in the mountains and spending the days hiking to the highest destinations with a camera and a 2wt. fly rod has been a recharge. I have been pleasantly surprised by blue grouse near my favorite golden trout waters, Mr. Rusty has been sniffing them out for weeks now...cast and blast adventure forthcoming in September...
Speaking of adventures, all this living at 9,000' to 12,000' elevation has been great training for a quest I have waited 30 years to pursue: Himalayan Snowcock in Nevada. I am pretty excited to finally save up the extra cash and have a time slot that works for a friend from Michigan and myself.
Rather than give a lengthy and needless description of the past months, I will let my photographs entertain everyone. Enjoy the view folks.

Some Golden trout pics for those who have never seen one. Precious fish for sure. I am exceedingly fortunate to live so near to where they exist. The photo with two fish in the snow is a comparison. The Goldbow hybrid is on bottom and the pure strain Golden is above it. The angler in the lake picture is artist Zach Even. He produces some nice wildlife/ fish paintings and prints for those who love the outdoors. The small one with perfect colors is being held by another friend who just deployed back to Afghanistan; it was his first golden.

All beautiful! You brought back memories of a backpacking trip for a week in the Lemhi's with a buddy a while ago. Stupidly, we forgot all our breakfasts. But there were lakes just like what you visited at 9000 feet elevation. At any one moment there would be at least 100 goldens jumping out of the water. The contest was to cast a fly and see if we could NOT catch a fish. We each took our limit every day and had fish for breakfast to save our hunger. The real danger was all the black bears roaming about. We made sure to burn all the fish remains, and hang our packs high. I also had a .41 mag just in case. |

Gorgeous photos. On the Milky Way photo, can you provide details of aperture, focal length and exposure time? Nice to see a dark sky. Gil |

Of the top of my head, I believe I used my standard goto settings for that type of stuff. ISO 1600, f4 aperture, 17mm focal length, and 20 second exposure. That was with a full frame sensor. With a camera that uses an APS-C sensor, the equivalent focal length would be 10 or 11mm. These milky way shots are not terribly difficult but keep in mind that manual focus is pretty much a requirement and the moon must either be down or the shot taken during the new moon. In other words, a truly dark sky is needed to get the details to show. |

Awesome pictures, thanks for sharing. Some of that country reminds me a lot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the high country around Bishop and Lone Pine. Beautiful, wild country for sure. You are a lucky man! |

Thanks for the photo tour and I am glad to see Rusty had a good summer. Which of Wyomings many ranges were you in?
Back in my youth a couple of buddies and I would set up Grouse Camp every fall and we camped half way between nowhere and no place else. The night skies are amazing in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but the elevation in the mountains always takes it to another level.
Now Grouse Camp is a cabin and while I enjoy the creature comforts I still yearn for the evening sounds of the wild and the skies with zero ambient light. On the plus side we are far enough north to see the northern lights when they grace the skies.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Thank you for sharing!
Over 20+ years ago, my wife and I would hike in to high lakes in the Cascade Range of Washington. No golden trout, but some nice brookies and cutthroats...Your superb photos brought back some nice memories. |
