[quote="Pine Creek/Dave"]Chicago,

The WNV scare is still going on, and in some places it may actually be a reality, however at this time there is no scientific proof. Here on the northern tier in Potter/Tioga County, our Grouse population has not been effected at all. This years young Grouse have the numbers actually increasing over all. Real nice Grouse hunting here right now.

I ran into the MI wildlife biologist for Iron and Dickinson counties in the field this year and he seemed to think three he found tested positive. He also said all three were emaciated and unable to fly. In Great Lakes states the grouse population is generally down and the RGS National Hunt in Grand Rapids, MN was the worst ever for the third year in a row. We are well past due for our 10 year cycle over here and very happy they are doing well in some areas. That should bode well for us in near future.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Chicago,

I will be very interested in the final results why the MI WNV study is completed.
I would like to know if WNV is actually having any real effect on the over all MI Grouse population. We need the same kind study here in Pa.

I thought I read (maybe RGS) that five or six states were cooperating on a WNV study this year and that the genesis for that study was work that PA had done. Maybe I have that goofed up.

By the way if you are a LC Smith guy a friend of mine in southern IL ran across a 16 Smith that is supposed to be a higher grade and the shop was asking $2,000. I know nothing of American Classics so I don’t know if that is a good deal or not. He said it was in great condition and the shop owner told him it came from a collector. Not sure if refinished and I know the American collectors frown on that.

Let me know if you are interested and I will contact the guy. We are hunting together the 8th.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Chicago,

RGS did use some of the Pa information to help start the WNV study in the different states, however the Pa WNV study is seriously flawed and very little of the information is relevant.

If you would pass on the information about the L.C. Smith double gun I would appreciate it.

Pine Creek/Dave,
I know nothing about this study.
Just out of curiosity, how was it "seriously flawed"?
thanks.....

mtBirder,

The study was flawed in this manner, 1 they stole Grouse eggs from the Pa mountains 2. the study directly injected the WNV into the captive Grouse chicks being raised, doing this all the chicks died, Turkey chicks would die also doing the same kind of WNV study. Turkey in the wild are unfenced by WNV.
