As summer nears it's end and the cooler weather of September find us, so do corn harvesters and Canada geese. My dad and I hunted a half harvested silage corn field that geese had been using for a few days. We used the standing corn as our hide and the big honkers never had a chance.

The mighty purple shell works wonders on honkers

Hank turned 11 in may and is still going strong. There's something special about seeing a old dog do what he loves.

pintail,

Great outing sir, looks like you guys had a fantastic day in the corn field. Love the dog picture with the Geese!

Old dogs are something special, treasure the memories!

Good job Pintail,
I miss hunting the waterfowling in BC, used to hunt Pit marsh and Boundary bay quite a bit in the 90’s when we lived in Steveston. Loved hunting for waterfowl with the mountains in the background.
Nice to see Hank still retrieving, my two labs are 4 and 2. Hopefully they make it that age and are still retrieving! I’m going to have to get some steel for my 16’s!

# 2 steel was absolutely devastating on honkers here yesterday as well, fired from purple hulls of course.

Gentlemen,

Every Grouse hunter knows that Sept Honkers are no where near as sweet as October Grouse, at least on an eating scale! Purple Hulls or not.

From one Dave to another, I agree with you on the eating scale. Grouse are at the top. Nothing like watching the dogs bring home the big birds though.
