Was going to go hun and chukar hunting for the weekend today, but my Garmin Astro went belly up last night, so I had to abort the trip until I can get it up and running. Just a bad battery I think. I've lost my setter Briar for two days in big country before, and don't want to go through the stress of not knowing where he is again. So, we just went to the local release site. Man, he was on FIRE this morning. We got our two bird limit in 20 minutes. Decided to take the Husky 16 today. Those Kent Bismuth 5's are awesome for pheasants!
Gorgeous Saturday here in the Pacific Northwest. Hope everyone is enjoying themselves!

Wyochukar I assume you are reloading the steel ammo. What velocity?

Sorry, it took me a while to notice this. The velocity is probably 1300-1350 "ish". I say "probably" and "ish" because the BPI data needed to be backed down a bit (a few pierced primers!) They called for 23 grains of Longshot, I used 22 (glad I didn't try 23). Now it's 21 for obvious reasons. I even omitted the buffer (not at all a necessity for steel shot). I can only imagine the pressure level with both buffer and the recommended charge of powder. Some of their data sheet notations say "hard hitter" and "surprise!" I think I know why. |

No 16 in the photo, it' was in my hands.
No birds in the photo, I never pulled the trigger this morning.
But the Mighty Mo was showing her finest fall display and my girl was happy to be out there, as was I......

Today I was finally able to get a couple roosters. These are my first since the season opened 2 weeks ago. Been seeing very few birds this year. In my neck of the woods they are way down. Still, nice to get out and enjoy the nice weather (for a change!) with my son and my faithful Raina.
Anyway, I was using my 16ga Uggie 1030 today

Pheasant, hun, sharptail, and blue grouse numbers all appear to be absolutely dismal throughout much of MT as well. I'm sure some folks are meeting with some measure of success, but my experience as well as most of my accomplices has been mostly low success. I actually quit hunting the central part of the state after two days of no birds. Can't talk myself into shooting anything that survived last winter and late spring........... |

I’m late to this thread. Opening day of dove season, my new 16, and smile, my 18 month old shorthair
My boy had fun
That one had a bracelet
My real bird season won’t start until November 10th. But I did get my first elk last week with my .300H&H. That’s like a 16 guage in the rifle world right? DIY public land high country elk. A pleasant misery for sure.

A few pockets of pheasants still inhabit the vast upland game barrens of Montana. The Feather 16 worked for this one and my girl found it, pointing dead in four foot tall grass. A public land wild rooster taken with a 16 gauge over a wonderful fuzzy faced pointer on a beautiful October morning.......

The larger spruce grouse sprinted flat out down the trail on a dead run and disappeared around the bend. After a short stalk the smaller one flushed at about 40 yds and I clean missed it.

Hey all, well went out today solo, just me and Raina. Managed to get one, but did see more than in past hunts (good sign!). Problem was, they were spooky today, just wouldn't hold point for long. Raina did well, so not her fault. Got pretty windy, so we cut the day short. Just happy to get one.
I used my 12b Coggie Konor today
