For all you shotgunners whose doodle season is in the rear view mirror,
Floyd, Sadie, Pop and I had a good day today on the nicest weather day we've had this year. Gil

Something I have never hunted. Someday it will happen. I have friends in Michigan and really need to go enjoy their way of doing things. Woodcock sure seem like a fun bird to hunt. Great work guys.

Floyd got back in town midweek from visiting family and despite warm temps and threat of rain, we took Pop and Sadie, his Britts, to some new ground and found some birds. We couldn't get Sadie to come out of the dog box and wear the beret which was a gag Xmas gift to Floyd. He in good nature ribs me about my French guns and boots, etc. As a good sport he wore the beret and held a bird shot with my Darne R10 20 ga. We beat the rain by minutes. Floyd's a professional carver by trade and here is a piece I've shown before. Everything is carved and painted by him including the leaves and grasshopper. He shoots as good as he carves and paints. Rick, last photo is for you. I posted this last year, another of Jacques, er, Floyd's carvings.

I don't see us in the woods until later this week. Temps the last few days have been in the 70's with nights in the 60s. It's 81 now at 3 pm today. Not good for dogs for reasons of temperatures and snakes.

Billy and friends ran into this medium sized diamondback hunting quail Saturday. With temps in the 60s he wasn't hugging ground near a hole basking, but buzzing away on a woods' road shoulder after another man got a little too close. A larger one was killed a few days before near the landowner's house on the same property. With night temps in the 60s and daytime highs in the mid 70s, I'm out of the woods with my dogs until a few days when winter temps roll back in.

Hey Gil

Looks like some of Floyd's shooting skills are rubbing off on you. Laughing Miss a couple so Bliss has some to play with on their return north. And as always thanks for taking the time to share pictures with us.

Rick

I hope you all had a good year and I know some of you are still hunting. The pheasant season closes today in S.E. WI today and I will have to move my hunting to the hunt club.

The grouse population in the Great White North has been poor the last few years but I did manage to have some success, albeit it was spotty. The color was better this year than it has been the last couple of years and that was a bonus. Once again a favorite cabin was sold and once again I decided not to buy it. So I had a new camp this year and while it lacks the deep woods setting of the last camp it does sit on a small inland lake and it has a lot more natural light, which I like.

Looking for new cover and this aspen needs a few more years to hold grouse, or woodcock for that matter. I have found many new cuts over the last few years and that should bode well for the grouse and woodcock populations. As the years pass the thought strikes me that I may never get to hunt in some of the spots I have discovered, but my kids will surely visit these spots and hopefully my grandkids.

The red maples were brilliant early in the fall

Parking spot at a favorite haunt

Drummer admires his work after a hunt in the above covert

Birch at the back of Wintergreen Trail (you will not find that on a map)

Late September and it was still really green

Maybe two weeks later

Mid October closer to Lake Superior

Storm clouds moving in and we had a lot of rain and dark days. There were maybe three or four blue bird days all fall. No complaints, they are all good days in the woods. Some are just more memorable than others. Hunting along this ridge line was productive for woodcock.

Rick, you know what they say about blind squirrels. Chicago, beautiful photos.
Jeff, Floyd, Abby, Willa and I (dog wrangler and flusher) hunted a new place today with good results. Floyd's Ithaca SKB 100, my Darne R10 and Jeff's Uggie, all 20 ga. Beautiful day with an early start to hunt while still cool; easy on both the four-legged and two-legged old dogs. Some good dog work today. Gil

Hey all, well, today was the last day of our bird hunting season. For us, it was a tough one. I have to say it's been the worst season I've had in many a year. Bird numbers were way down, lots of lost cover due to last years drought and the weather was screwy as well. Still, it's always great to get out with my son and of course my Raina. The best part of this season is it was a safe one. No one got hurt, both man and dog. I only hope that this winter will be a mild one and nesting season is good. We need a rebound. Thanks to all who have made so many nice comments and kind words on the pictures and posts that I've made this season. They truly are appreciated! One last thanks to the good Lord and St Hubert for helping us get the birds we did.

Jim and I went out east yesterday to hunt one of friends farm (by Pettibone), they got a lot more snow and drifting than we did. Some areas were dry, but for the most part the snow was pretty deep, tough getting thru in some areas. I did manage one, but Jim didn't connect. I used my 12b Henry Atkin

Today (the last day) it was pretty windy (20+mph). I hunted around around the house and was darn lucky to get a couple. Raina did very well today, even in the wind we had. So a good ending to the season. I was using my 12ga Siace

gjw, your posts make me feel at home. Let me explain. I fell in love with North Dakota long ago, almost to the point of moving there. It was a real close decision, but in the end it appeared that Wyoming should remain my home. That said, this past season is only the second in over 20 years that I didn't go there to hunt. My friends tell me I didn't miss much, but they are just thinking of bird numbers. I really missed not being there.

We are fortunate in Wyoming since our hunting continues. Where I live duck closes Jan. 13, chukar/hun on Jan. 31, and Canada goose lasts until Feb. 17 this year. With duck winding down I took the privilege of hunting a spring creek today. Mallards love the place. Here are some shots from today:

Thank you to all who are posting photos and sharing stories. My 2018 hunting season ended before it began and seeing yours documented here has helped cheer me through the season that wasn't...

I had one of the strangest experiences yesterday in the woodcock woods. I got an alert from Abby's gps collar that she was on point 125 yards out. As I started hightailing it towards her location, I heard Willa's bell to my left running with another dog, whose or where it came from I didn't know. I closed in on Abby on point and should have seen her standing there. All I saw at 25 feet was her blue collar, the gps unit and her bell on the ground. I thought that dog running with Willa looked familiar. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Today I went with Jeff, Floyd, Pop and Sadie. We downed 6 but only recovered 5. Floyd's gun was AWOL from photo but not from the action. It was a beautiful day in the woods. Gil
