My upland hunting has been so so this year, especially after my setter took off and was lost in the central Oregon wilderness for a week. I searched days, hiked 20 miles, and nothing. Thankfully, elk hunters found him on horseback at the bottom of a canyon a week after he left. He was emaciated, but he'll be fine after much vet care and r&r. So much for upland hunting this year.
That said, I've had some great waterfowl hunts this year. Sorry, no 16 in the following pics, but I finally connected on snipe! I went out and targeted them, and they are hard to hit little buggers. Harder than dove in my opinion. This is my 1890's 6.4lb Lefever damascus 12:
Also went on a guided duck hunt last weekend. Four of us got mallard limits in about an hour. Best duck hunt I've ever had. I shot a f/xf Husqvarna 310as 12 I picked up the week before, and I LOVE the way it shoots. Was using ITX reloads. Fantastic duck gun:

Uncle Dan Fan,
Sorry about the lost gun dog, lots of Grouse hunters bring their dogs to me for training, I hate to see this kind thing happen, it's truly a night mare. If you need some help after the dog is back to normal, let me know. We will make sure this incident never happens again for ya. if you are a Military Veteran it will be done at no cost to you.
The Duck and Snipe are great substitute however!
All the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

A memorable hunt a few weeks ago. My 16 month old French Brittany Pointed his first and second wild roosters. Great to see him develop and have some great instinct with these birds. My 9 year old veteran rounded out the day with a really solid point. The Fox got the job done with some mid 80's Federal 6s. Good Times.

Hey all, well here's my Thanksgiving bird. My son Jim and I went out for our annual Thanksgiving day hunt. Saw birds (not many) but we only managed to get one. Was a great day, topped off by a wonderful dinner.
I used my 16ga Garbi 100 today

Haven't looked at this thread in a while so first thanks for the compliments Gil and Mark. These old hammer guns have captured my heart so while my bespoken 16 ga. Grulla 216RB sits quietly in the gun safe I have carried a Belgium "no name" 16 ga. hammer gun that I "stole" from Simpson Ltd for $145 all season.
Gil for whatever reasons the woodcock have been very scarce in my coverts this fall. Hope you have better luck than I have in finding them.
Mark, omg, I panic when I lose a dog for 15 minutes. Can't imagine the pain of losing one for a week. Was this Brier??? He's getting too old to pull a stunt like that. Give him a stern talking to and an ear rub from me. |

ey all, well, I went out today solo, wonderful day weather wise, sunny, 45 and mild winds. But, few birds, I did manage one and alas flat out missed one, oh well!
Anyway, I used my 12b H&H Royal (can't rotate the pic, sorry for that!)

Will do Rick. Yes it was indeed Briar. 9.5 yrs old. It happened at night at a ranch house I was staying at when his gps collar was off. |

Hey all, this weekend is the end of our Deer Gun Season, so we tried to fill my daughters tag. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to. My son Jim and I did some bird hunting as well. We saw birds, but without a dog it was tough. I did manage one. Weather wasn't the best, cold and windy. But being with the kids was a success for me.

At the risk of losing membership, I admit I've been committing 20ga this year. It actually goes back into the end of last season and a M37 Ithaca from 1951 is to blame. The thing just plain fits me and shoots apparently fine patterns from what is marked and measures as a Full choke. It hasn't torn up close birds in the least and it reaches out for the few longer chances I've taken.
Naturally, the 16s will not be ignored and first out of the vault is the M12. There's a noticeable weight difference between these two, beyond the M12's rib, not just in lbs but also bias, but they're equally effective for the job. Nebraska is down to putting out pheasants in the eastern, denser populated area of the state so they came relatively easy while the quail have done well the past couple seasons as well. Hunting pal's Citori is a 20ga, he remains a non-16er.
