For a Handful of Feathers and Fragrance of Grass by Guy de la Valdene. The title to the second book was an homage to Jim Harrison as the title came from a line in one of Harrison's poems regarding the fragrance of grass under a bird dog's paws. |

Mr. Woolner was an early hook & bullet how-to columnist known primarily for salt water and his “chopper”. He hunted the east coast area when it still had grouse, woodcock and access.
His advice always seemed ok to me and from a very down-to-earth basis and approach.
I particularly enjoyed the photos in his books.
His “chopper’” continues to bring forth all forms of comments...basically, it was a rough-looking 12 BUL.
Sporting writers came in many different flavors and wrote with reality and/or creativity....none perfect and one simply finds or does not find in each something that matters or for which they can relate.
The search is the thing, as much as is the finding. |

Gentlemen,
Pick up a old copy of GBE's Upland Shooting Life, great read, you may not agree with everything he believed, however the read is fantastic. Spillers Grouse and Grouse Feathers tops GBE stuff for pure enjoyment, Corey Ford Top self also. Woolner right their also. Lots of really great reading from prior generations, wish we had more of this kind talent, in todays sports world.

I am surprised there is no mention of Archibald Rutledge. What I have read so far is certainly enjoyable.

I enjoy many hunting/shooting authors, but Rutledge is one of my top picks for favorite. He was the first poet laureate of South Carolina, and was the epitome of the Southern gentleman. His stories mostly revolve around hunting on his low-country plantation and are recounts of actual hunts. For a great first read get Hunting and Home in the Southern Heartland.

Stan, Pat Conroy's My Reading Life has an account of Conroy as an aspiring teenage writer meeting Rutledge at Hampton Plantation. Gil |

Not as famous but well worth your time is C. W. Guswelle's book "The Rufus Chronicle". His dog stories were regular features in the Kansas City Star newspaper. I believe the book is still available on Amazon and you can see some of his videos on PBS.
I was privileged to meet Charles when I was searching for a copy of one of his video productions. He invited to his home to pick up a copy from his personal stash. A fine gentleman and talented storyteller... |

Some might have heard of a guy named Bill Faulkner. His accounts of the big woods , it’s people, dogs , and The Bear, describe things likely gone forever. |

I found a bedtime story called The Adventures Of Bob White by Thornton W. Burgess at a flea market a couple of weeks ago. It was printed in 1923. I haven’t read it yet but it looks like quite an easy read. I’ll try and post a couple of pics.
