Was given two boxes of Sears Sportload 16 ga 2 1/2 dram 1 oz 6 shot...Shells are in fantastic shape and can hear the bb's inside move when shaking them. I imagine these are pretty light loads given the dram....My understanding shooting a 2 3/4 in a 2 1/2 chamber will increase pressure around 500 psi if my memory is correct...Any reason why I shouldnt shoot these in my Foxes with 2 1/2 chambers knowing they have good barrels and solid wood.

Thanks

I thought the same thing with my Sterlingworth a few years ago using B&P 2 5/8 inch loads. Cracked the wood behind the receiver, these were # 6 shot, don't remember the drams though.

The wood looked great so did the bores, I don't know how to check the wood on old guns, unless you have had it restocked.

If it was me, I wouldn't use them through the Foxes.

The gun means a lot more to me than a couple boxes of ammo. Wink

All of my Foxes are restocked so the wood shouldn’t be an issue

If you're comfortable running them through a short chamber, I won't stand in your way. the 2 1/2-1-6 load is pretty much a standard 16 light game load. That doesn't give much certainty about the recoil, but it does give a general idea.

Enjoy the aroma.

A 16ga 2 1/2DE 1oz load equates to 1165fps. I've seen the 500fps figure quoted a lot. IIRC, that was derived using a 12ga. Not certain if that translates to all other bores as well.

I tend to be more conservative and wouldn't use them if the gun was mine. Increased recoil is also a consideration when firing longer than chamber length shells.

Milrob; You said they were "2 1/2 Dram", which is a reference to the powder charge (Equiv. to 2 1/2 dram of black powder.) You didn't mention the overall cartridge length. it should say, unless they are REALLY old.

Or sell them. Collectors are always on the prowl for that kind of stuff. More then likely get enough for RST 2 1/2" loads and at least a cup of coffee.

I would not recommend them in a 2 1/2 inch chamber.

Why? Because Paper hulls are thicker than plastic hulls.

I have been known to shoot 2 3/4 hulls in my 2 1/2 inch chambered guns.
In fact I shot 100 2 3/4 rounds in a light French double with 2 1/2 chamber on Tuesday at skeet and crazy. They did well.

But the plastic hulls being thinner will allow movement of the wad and shot much easier into the barrel proper

My two cents
Mike

I have no idea on the pressure issue.
However, if it were me, I’d not chance it for two measly boxes of old shells.

If I found myself without a 2 3/4 " 16 ga. shotgun and came into a quantity of 2 3/4" paper hulled shells , I would use that as an excuse to go out and buy one! Just to smell the fired hulls!
