I have a remington 1100 in 16 gauge and was curious if it was possible to add a vent rib to the barrel? it's an older 71 model but is extremely reliable. If it is possible about what would it cost? |

I have a Simmons rib on my 1100 16 gauge. It has been on there for almost 20 years now. |

simmons is 400 bucks + , so you have to decide how badly you want it . |

Cheaper to find another barrel with the rib. You could perhaps then sell the one you've got if you want to, and further reduce the cost of what you want. Even if you have to get the new VR barrel reamed or choke tubed to get the constriction you want, you'll still be money ahead. Is your 16 gauge Model 1100 even worth $400? -- seriously.
Another thing you could do is get a cheap plastic accessory rib and bond it on or use double-stick tape, or make one from wood or aluminum and do the same. You will have to match the profile of the barrel, but with patience, it can be done, and cheaply, too. The result might not be as satisfying as an original rib, but on a $250 gun, the money left in your pocket might feel pretty good.
Last question is: "Why do you think you need a rib?" It certainly is unnecessary to your performance as a shooter, unless you shoot so often you get massive heat distortion -- but then again, why are you looking down the barrel when you are supposed to be looking at the target. Frankly, I prefer solid ribs or no rib at all for hunting/field use. Too often brush and crap can get into the spaces of a ventilated rib. That's just me, however. I do like the look of a rib, solid or ventilated, better than a bare barrel on a repeater or an O/U. I'll never have a vent rib on a SxS though, unless it is a Model 21 target gun (for which I would be more likely to develop an affinity if someone virtually gave it to me ). Once again, those are just my preferences, FWIW, (which, I admit, is not much to most! ).
Cheers!

Nope, not unless it is beat to within an inch of it's life.
Of course I have probably spent about $1000 on my 1100, with all the work I have had done to it. Back in 1991 I bought it new for $300.00. |

Might be worth a call to see if either of the 2 listed are vent or if he has any vents in stock that aren't listed.

rkittine started another thread promoting Ada-A-Rib, I have one on my 870 that I moved off a Stevens 220 plain single shot, works fine. Also added one of their LOP adjusting systems to the same gun.

Scroll down to Clamp-a-rib for plain barrels. |

"Why do you think you need a rib?" Some people just prefer to look down one. Some people find that they subconsciously line up their target better/ quicker, it's sort of like the old SxS vs. O/U debate. The gun also has a nicer appearance with one, but that's individual whim.
I agree that a used VR barrel will probably be cheaper. |
