Every time I’ve played the choke guessing game the birds do the opposite of what they’re supposed to do per the conditions.
That leads me to just settle on a modified choke. Plus or minus. |

Cheesy,
Lots of bird hunters that carry single barrel guns do what you do. However our old 16 gauge M12 Winchester was opened up to IC for the same purpose, both for Pheasant and Grouse hunting long ago. I find the IC in that particular Model 12, 16 gauge works quite well.
Got to say however I prefer the SXS double gun choked differently in each tube.

For me it's hard to carry a pump gun when you have great double guns to bird hunt with.
16 Gauge J.P. Sauer Pre War Best double guns with DT for instant choke selection are smooth as white lightening.
