Didn't see the news about Flash. Sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a dog ranks up near the top in misery; just behind losing a human loved one. Sounds like you and Uno are a perfect union. Good luck. Gil |

Something rather special in the grey of an old dog. My hope is that you and Uno have a load of good times in the years to come. |

Nothing hurts like losing your dog. Glad you were able to pair up with Uno though. Hope he keeps you in line!! Great post. |

This is what it is all about. All of it. Hoping that you can reach your 80's and still walk the fields and woods. And have a faithful companion.
I have watched this from the beginning, and it has touched me deeply. Last Dollar I am so thankful that you have found someone that can bless you, and you him.
You would think that as you get older the easier it would be with each passing. But it is not the case, at least for me it is harder each time for me. Like each deployment overseas they get harder to leave the family behind.
However it sounds like a good fit for the both of you. And that you will be both be the better for the experience. And those dirty socks and his need to fetch will keep your legs young. As much as they can be.
Sounds like you have both found each other, and for that I am glad for you both.
Does not diminish those that have gone before him. As Upland Carpenter said there is something special in the grey of an old dog. He knows of what he speaks and I have a feeling that you do too. |

A friend had to say the final goodbye to his wirehair yesterday. Made me cry. I held Rusty for hours last night. |

If you dwell on it, their short expiration dates will break your heart. Gil |

One more reason I stick with Border Collies. At least they tend to go 15 years on the average. Katie actually hunted into her 15th year. I don't know how people deal with the 7-8 year thing, it's just too hard too often. Heck, 15 year spans are too darned often. |

WyoChukar,
Penny my Gordon is now 14 and fading fast, most of my gun dogs have lasted over 14 years and hunted almost to the very last year. Sampson my SM lived to be 18 years old, hunted till he was almost 15.
You are correct the men who only have their dogs live around 7-8 years have repeated heart ache all the time. I like my dogs to live a long time, I take good care of all of them and they live as part of our family, inside our home, have great Vet care and eat well. Purchase from the right genetic line and you have a high probability of long age.
We did loose our female Weimar at 10 due to her Epilepsy, we do miss her a lot, around our home it feels kind empty without the big dog presents, and we also know the home is not as secure.
Planning on purchasing a PoodlePointer about 1 year old in the near future, I understand they live to be quite old.

Roger that will comply, Poodlepointer! Unless I use the cap on the Pointer the Mac corrects the spelling every time by splitting the word.

Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss.
A new dog never replaces an old dog; it merely expands the heart.
If you have loved many dogs your heart is very big. |

I wrote, on this forum of the pain of losing my companion of 12+YEARS, MY Brittany Flash. Like most folks who lose their best friend dog, I agonized over replacing him, and halfheartedly sorta looked. I am 85 years of age, still get to the field almost every day, and have killed 21 WILD roosters so far without a dog, this year. BUT, it wasn't the same. Then Dawn Craig, the Lady breeder from whom I have gotten my last few dogs, called. She told me of a nine year old GSP, whose owner had died. The dog "UNO' was consigned to a boarding kennel and never picked up. I told Dawn, well. He is old, will move slow, want to sleep a lot, have arthritis, being German will likely fart in his sleep, be stubborn, nearing the end of his useful life ,have to get out and pee in the middle of the night etc etc...Dawn said "You two will make a good pair"...
I went and got him.....Don't forget the old guys....!

Your story is both a heart warmer and an encouragement.
I hope you become fast friends---I suspect you will. |

Best post I've read in ages. Stay upright, keep moving and wish you two many more years roaming the countryside together. |

LD, well done. My third setter, Wind’em, I adopted when he was 10. Had him for 41/2 years and buried him out back about five years ago. Miss him all the time and it was a great, impulsive decision. All dogs need good homes, especially the older ones. So glad you helped. You will be too. |
