I'm not the most astute person when it comes to searching the internet...and I know it. Soooo....does anyone know of a site or video that tells one how to brown Damascus barrels then....clean them off so one metal is highlighted more than the other? See, I don't even know the right language...
I have browned several muzzleloading barrels both rifle and shotgun and I'm fairly confident I can brown these original Manton, 16 bore tubes. It's the wash or whatever it's called, so the two metals are in contrast, that I'm pretty much ignorant of. Any help?
Barring that, any recommendations of who is capable of the work? |

I use a product called Evapo-Rust diluted 4 to 1 with distilled water. A gallon is $25.00 it is a dip process so a long plastic tank is needed. After the brown is done and is a day or so old dip the absolutely clean barrel in for 5 min then look at it under an incandescent light not fluorescent, when you get the look you want rinse with cold water. Do not touch the barrel with your bare hands. The stuff is not caustic or harmful but oil from the skin will affect the result |

byrdog, is Evaporust commonly available, such as at hardware stores? And thank you!
JPM, if it's the video I'm thinking of he's using bluing rather than browning, no? I wondered if what he used after the bluing was complete would work the same for browning. |

I buy it at Tractor Supply. the chemical that is used in the video is ferric chloride, it is caustic. |

Dittos to byrddog. Evaporust also has a "find by zip code" locator on their website.
I've used it to refurbish some Stanley and Millers Falls woodworking planes. Worked well. It will, however, soften the japanning (the hard black finish) on the planes if you let it soak too long.
Should have qualified my reference to the videos by stating i'm in the learning mode and this is as new to me as to you. I have a few "beater" reliable old guns I hope to learn on.... so we'll see how that goes. Cheers and best wishes. |

Thank again, to the both of you! I'm grateful
jpm, I've browned lots of barrels and M/L parts but getting that stunning Damascus browned pattern...I'm like a babe in the woods. |
