Something sort of fell in my lap the other day, an english walnut stock blank. I'm always watching out for a bargain and this one wasn't getting any love form anybody so I felt it my duty to give it a new home. It came surprisingly cheap and the grain structure lays proper.

A forearm blank came with it but doesn't match quite right. That's okay though, I have need of it elsewhere. No, a matching forearm will come out of this piece. There is enough left over since I will cut a straight english grip stock. Now the big question, what gun do I put this on? I wish I could clone it!

It looks like I need to find a graded gun in need of a stock. I do have an E Lefever that needs a stock... and the the barrels re-soldered! Uh oh, that one's a 12 ga. I hear gasps of horror form the audience.

The EH Parker 10 ga. already has nice wood, as does the other Syracuse Lefever 12.

The Lefever D.S. 16 does need a stock, the cracked one it came with finally split on a chukar hunt. Problem is, that's a mighty plain gun for such nice wood, as are my other candidates. It looks like I need to take up engraving...that's eventually going to happen.

N.I.D. 16? Got one, field grade, and already have semi inlet blank for that, something else that came along wearing too low of a tag.

Sell my 16's and buy one real nice one? It would get lonely without more of its kind. See the kind of dilemma I made for myself?

I guess the jury is still out, but I know it will find a gun to cling too sooner or later.

WyoChukar,

You have a nice pre 13 L.C. Smith 00 gun that wood would look real nice on. When the gun is restored it would come out looking something like the original 00 below.

L.C. Smith Man

L.C. Smith 00, 16 gauge with serious French Walnut Stock.

Guess I go against the grain some on this. I’ve always appreciated gorgeous wood far above any engraving, and consider engraved metal to somewhat look too busy when paired with highly figured wood. I’d use that walnut on any shotgun that I highly regard it’s barreled action, and needed the stock replaced. The less engraved the better with this wood.

Wahoo,

I can appreciate your way of thinking, and the 00 gun WyoChukar owns, is not a Special Order gun and has no engraving, so it would fit your qualifications to a tee!

What a beautiful gun it would be with that high grade Walnut wood!

The problems with that 00 are as follows. One, it already has decent figure and I do have a block of english that matches the butt stock perfectly, even the figure. As such there is a small beavertail forearm coming...and some tidy inlay work in both pieces of wood.

With nice wood, the 00 does need engraving, but nothing overkill. I may do some drawings and post them.

10 gauge is blasphemy? Well now, I submit the following: both barrels of a 16 sort of equal a 10. What's more, a 2 7/8" chambered 10 is just as odd as a 16. Big girls need love too!

Maybe the Fox could use a little cosmetic surgery...

WyoChukar,

I did notice the 00 had some decent wood on her, and I also thought about your Fox, with up graded wood it would look fantastic. My buddy Ken has an A grade with up graded wood and I have my eye on eventually owning it.

Pine Creek/Dave
L.C. Smith man

It would come out something like this!

Oh boy that is a gorgeous Fox! I forgot to say that I do like border engraving with fine wood, and I also like case harden colors too with high grade wood. I like coin finish when it looks aged also.
