Recently I took a week to go fishing in North Dakota where I normally hunt birds. I know that is risking sanity, but the idea had merit. The big draw was to go try fishing for white bass. Devil's lake has bigger ones, but I liked the fact that I could go visit a buddy and stay on his farm with no schedule whatsoever. I fixed a few things, helped out where I could, and fishing was simply a matter of whenever, wherever.

Of course the first thing I did was go see if whiteys were running up the creek 2 1/2 miles from the farm. They were! Oddly, nobody indulges in small creek fishing there. I guess it's because most of the time, there's nothing in that creek, but with the white bass spawning run on, things were different for a short while. One day I caught 106 using a tag team combo of spinning rod and 2 wt. fly rod. Oh my what fighters they are. There were other forays for walleye, pike, and bluegill and all of them proved enjoyable. Actually everything about the trip was wonderful...except for the ticks! I even restocked my supply of bungee cords from the rich bounty of bungees along the highways! I know, it's a desperate maneuver to go "hunting" for bungee cords, but it's summer and hunting is hunting!

In my wanderings I heard rooster pheasants crowing, mourning doves cooing, spotted a pair of huns and watched waterfowl, all good signs of things to come. There isn't a bumper crop of anything, but it soothed my soul. This fall could be interesting since I now have that fishing license. Prairie cast & blast? Oh, it's coming.

Great stuff . It’s amazing how densely packed those little sandies can be , and lots of fun.
My brother called last weekend and said “don’t tell dad”, but I’ve been diagnosed with macular degeneration, and I’m not even driving anymore. He’s my little brother and mid-fifties. I invited him to meet me and my son for a couple of days of trout fishing in New Mexico- can you fly fish? He said he’d love to but didn’t think he could see well enough to tie his own flies. We hadn’t fished together since we were kids. I said I don’t give a damn I’ll tie them for you. I’m driving from Tennessee to pick him up in Albuquerque and my son and his buddy are driving down from Denver to camp and fish the Cimarron for a couple of days. Life is short

I always enjoy the photo tours you post, both the great photography and the written narrative. It sounds like it was a pleasant way to spend a little time this Spring. Hope the summer treats you well. I am debating if I am going to take a puppy from a litter my male setter sired. It would require a trip to Fort Collins, CO to pick up pup, but Rocky Mountain National Park is close to there and should not be too crowded this time of year.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Would love to give that a try looks like you had a blast. Our trip north to the St. Lawrence river is fast approaching and even though the water level has broken the record for the 2nd time in 3 years I can’t wait. Fishing most of the day then sitting by the camp fire at night and listening to the loons call is wonderful.
