Hi fellas, I am considering a purchase of a 16ga Sauer SxS. The model I am not sure of and I am trying to determine how old it is (if it is pre-WW2) or not. It has cocking indicator pins and seems in decent condition. Here are some pictures...

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Not positive, but think the 134 on the barrel flats refers to January,1934. If so , probably 2 9/16 chambers. You'd have to have the chokes and chambers measured to be sure.

What is the mark on the bottom right of the flats, second picture, under the glare?

Thanks for the info so far guys. I'm not sure this will help but here is a close up and dimmed shot of the flats.

Savage is right about the 134 stamp. Date stamps came into use at the Suhl proofhouse in 1922-23 and Sauer serial numbers were in the lower 200,000 range in the early 20s. The serial number would be significantly higher a decade later and the gun would definitely have a date stamp (as it does). Everything is consistent with Jan 34 as to when it was proofed, so safe to assume it's a pre-WWII gun.

Edit: Crown over W indicates both barrels had at least some choke at time of proof. I believe the 16 in a circle indicates the gun had chambers standard for the period, i.e short chambers from our perspective. Safest to assume 2 1/2" or 2 9/16" until proven otherwise.

Thanks lads. The seller says it is 2 3/4” and choked mod and light full. Can’t confirm without handling it though. Short chamber is not a deal breaker for me.

Anyone have issues with the plastic trigger guard models? This one has a crack at the screw which doesn’t surprise me.

Nice looking gun. The trigger guard should be horn if it's original. It can be repaired.

That gun is a little 'odd' in that it looks more like a pre 30's gun, and horn trigger guards seem to have gone out of fashion for the most part until WW2 came about. Some of the war time guns have horn guards. Saving a bit o' steel, I guess. Any way I think the gun is a '34 based on the stamping and serial number.

Buy it, or send me the contact info.... Wink

I agree with you on the horn. The seller specifically told me plastic, but it does look like the horn guard on my drilling. One could get the two confused I suppose.

And thanks skeet for the proofs chart.

I’ll piggyback on the OP’S thread because we have the same issue with a cracked horn trigger guard. Mine on a 1919 manufactured no name 16.

What “glue” would be best for repairing?

So, I got the Sauer on Tuesday. I looked it over and it appears all original and totally unmolested. LOP is around 14 1/4" (depending on how you measure it) and the weight is at 6lbs 5oz. No buggered screws, no rotten or cracked wood, just the cracked trigger guard and Sauer buttplate. Patterns fairly tight (mod and full I think) and the chambers are 2 1/2" with a short forcing cone. Barrels are 27" in length, have about 70% blue and a bit of freckling in each bore. I think a polish would be in order.

I shot a round of skeet with it and it went bang every time. Triggers were crisp and I shot it as well as any tight choked double at skeet. So...

It needed a bath. I suspect it maybe has never been opened up.

Into the ultrasonic with you...

And...squeaky clean

I am still stumped about this gun. The cocking pins are the biggest oddity. There is also what looks to be an extra screw holding on the bottom plate. I don't think it was made for the NA market.
