Are you roll crimping? If you are, any load that is listed at 2 3/4" will fit into a 2 1/2" roll crimped hull. |

If the stack fits in a shorter hull, will pressures go up?
I have an 9/8 oz load that is to short for 2 3/4 inch hulls it requires overshot cards and stuff. It fits perfectly in a 2 1/2 but I wasn't sure if I could do that safely or not. |

Tom Armburst says Yes . How much is the question , depends on the load . |

I do not see how a shorter hull makes pressures increase. Tapered wall hull yes, maybe sometimes, straight wall hull no.
If I take a load that is too short for a Federal 2 3/4" hull(that it was tested in) and I cut 1/4" off it so that the wad column height, without all the fillers, is correct, and crimp it, that pressure isn't going to go up. Maybe a few hundred pounds because you took away the fillers.......but nothing worth a look. Some of the non-tox stuff reacts a little more when you get rid of fillers, but even then.
Why? Because you have not changed the size of the combustion chamber(hull walls, basewad, wad obturating cup). Peak pressure happens very early on in the process, as in before the wad clears the hull.
Now if you start changing the size and shape of the combustion chamber, you have the chance of something actually changing..
It is very load dependent. |

Yes, Cheddites are pretty much all the same. What little differences there are make no difference. |

Translation:
The 2 3/4 Cheddite with pie crimp
and
the 2 1/2 Cheddite with roll crimp
have about the same useable internal volume.

Bret,
Where did the original data come from? Generally (not always) most good data goes along with loads that fit reasonably well. |

Just going by what Tom told me when he was doing some testing for me in 2.5" hulls . |

If you change to a short hull the internal volume is less so Tom is correct. the pressure rize may be significant in a very few cases . I load 25 grns of L.S. in both 70mm and 65mm hulls with 1oz lead both loads are fine.
If you need a cutting tool to make shorts PM me |

fn16ga,
I am really not doubting what Mr. Armbrust told you......just that there are a lot of if, and and buts attached. Very load dependent....generally mild lead loads in straight wall hulls don't change much. |
