Will be going out to the trap field tomorrow to test-out my new-to-me Ithaca NID in 16 bore.

Should be fun because the only 16 I had before was an abysmal Zavasta M75 that didn't fit. Best at trap was 20. Worst was 6.

Have the problem of O/U vs SxS for shooting. 49 years of O/U vs 2 months of SxS.

Hoping better fit and lessons learned on-line will help with my shooting.

Looking at somewhere around 150 to 200 rounds for tomorrow. Hoping for my first 25 straight in 16 bore!

Yeah,......right.

Looking to do better than that nasty Zavasta that I foolishly bought-into.

If this pans out, the Zavasta becomes a wall-hanger, and I buy a MEC 600 JR for 16 bore. I only have about 300 hulls of Herters to reload.

2:00 in the morning and I am posting this and should be in bed.

IDIOT!!!

See you guys tomorrow.

Congratulations on the NID. I think its one of the underappreciated classics.

Well,.....I still have a lot to learn. 9,9,13,and 14.

But it feels and swings better than the Zavasta. Problem is gun mount and cheek position. I think it will sort out with more practice.

Can't say enough good about Barry and the gun itself. It's not perfect, but who or what would be after 84 years? But it is plenty good enough for me.

Tomorrow I go out to prise a 16 bore A.H. Fox Sterlingworth from 1935, from the grip of a grouse hunting gun store owner. He has shown me the weapon, and I was impressed.

After this, I bought an Ithaca NID from 1936. Sucker looked like it was only 10 years old.

Now I have to beard the lion in his cave for the Sterlingworth. It looks good and feels good within the hands. It is lighter than the NID. It swings better. It is ..........

I just need to get it. I'm 63, and I am lightening the load I carry into the woods. No more 12 bore and the crippling weight imposed by the gun and the shells.

20 Bore is too whippy and too long a shot string for me. So I have gone back to the gauge of our fathers.

Wish me luck in finding my perfect 16 bore to fit my eye.

Will update after the purchase of this weapon. Kenny says he has a pattern board in back of his shop! Great news. I will shoot it with 1 oz. of 6 and see how it does.

Then the money may change hands. But I have high hopes from Kenny. He is honest and is a Grouse Hunter. What more could you want?

Talk to you all tomorrow.

Thanks Skeettx, But it is more than handsome.

It feels good between the hands. It snaps to my shoulder quickly and is light in handling. It looks as good as some of the weapons that I have that are only a decade old. Instead of eight.

I collect weapons that fit me and do what I want them to do for me. I care a little less for appearances than functionality. That is not to say that I do not want or appreciate fine pieces of gun manufacturing that I may be able to appropriate.

I also own a Model 100 Ithaca by SKB 12 bore with 30 in. barrels. Feels VERY good between the hands and has had the comb reformed. It now shoots like a O/U gun and is a favorite in trap. But is is heavy. More than my Antonio Zoli field grade.

But it has it's place. Along with all of my guns.

I reduce to bag any runners with my Thompson Contender 410/45 pistol.

Groundhog lazer.....Ruger #1 243.

Deerslayer.... Ruger M77 in 30-06.

Crow killer.....Volquartsen (any model).

Small look at my arsenal.

Better yet, he packs up his Gordon and guns and heads to Kansas for variety beyond the grouse and woodcock that are about the only birds available in the tri-state area. Hope the gun fits you and you're able to add to your stable.

Not trying to add to the stable, (Ghod, I have enough guns as it is!) But I want a light and fast swinging gun to use on Grouse. This gun will be a killer on anything less than Grouse.

I go tomorrow to pick-up a 1935 Fox Sterlingworth in 16 bore. 28" barrels and 2 1/2 in. chambers. Looks to be very nice. And I had my hands on it.

Bought unseen an Ithaca 1936 NID from the forums. VERY NICE gun! Just wish I could get my eye right. All it takes is time.

Just want a light shotgun to carry in the field because this chicken is no longer considered 'Spring'. And I wanted to go back to what my father and grandfather carried out in the field.

Tomorrow I go to buy a 1935 Fox Sterlingworth in 16 bore.

I think my SOCD (Shotgun Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). may have kicked-in and messed with my perception of what is real and not.

The beast is righteous and has very few flaws for being 85 years old.

It kicks less than a 12 bore, and swings faster.

But it is still an old shotgun. I must REALLY look it over and pick every flaw for what I can get. Because I have looked -over this gun before. No flaws that I could see.

In this scenario, I am tempted to just 'pay the man' and be happy that I found a weapon that fit.

Tomorrow will tell the tale. I can't wait.

Congrats on the NID I really like the looks of it, and it sounds like it fits you well.

Several years ago I had a nice Fox Sterlingworth 16, and (foolishly) sold it. I wish I had that gun back, oh well. The bright side is I still have the one SxS that took the longest to find, a Husqvarna model 310 16 ga. I will keep that one for when I need to scratch the SxS itch - it is a sweet gun!

Truth is I found over a long period of time, that I shoot stack barrel guns better than any others. I still love the classic SxS's but for me I shoot best with the o/u's.

Good luck!

Well........

I bought it!

Will have to send away for the letter on the history of the gun but the webs state somewhere around 1934 to 35.

It is lighter than the Ithaca NID. Feels better; almost like my (dare I say it) 870 Wingmaster. Pull it up naturally, and looking down the barrels........all I see is bead.

Finish is flaking on the butstock, normal dents and scratches from 85 years of hunting.

Took off the forend and tried to twist the barrels. No twist or flex. Locked-up tight.

Case colors are gone and barrels are brown. Someone dropped it on the end of the right barrel. Little ding.

Mirror bright bores. Crisp triggers with little to no side slop. Firm safety.

When I bring the gun up, it balances in my left hand, feels like there is nothing there.

I think I found my Grouse gun.

I will keep the Ithaca for Pheasants and heavier shells.

Unfortunately, we got whacked last night with four inches of powder snow,.....so testing at the range will have to wait.

Photos to come later.

Roger is a happy camper!

Congratulations on getting a good case of SOCD!! I hear the only cure to is feed it more doubles.

Nice NID too, I've been on the fence for a long time about picking up another classic 16 like the NID or another Elsie, but of my classics, I keep reaching for my 16ga Sterly the most because of the same characteristics you point out. Light in the hand, handles and points great. So I keep the thought in the back of my mind that I wouldn't use the new to me 16 too much.

Although I have to admit. I got around that thought by getting other doubles in different gauges...
