. . . I found out they're much easier to hit with 16ga than with a Canon. My dogs are Finn and Jackson, while a friend has some fabulous dogs with Izzy, Rynn and Max. Here's the commentary and some pictures:
Rynn - Just turned a year old. She's a little pocket rocket woodcock pointing machine.
Probably Rynn's last year of getting to break after the bird is flushed. Boy is it fun though.
Jackson, the 12 year old. Doesn't have much style but still finds and holds birds.
Finn on point Izzy backing. 19 out of 20 times it's the other way around.
These little bog suckers are hard to hit.
They can almost fly upside down
Finn . . . doesn't point a whole lot of birds yet, but sure does look pretty when he does.
Rynn - about the size and speed of a Jack Russel terrier but points birds like she's won 6 national championships.
Izzy - locked up in the early morning sunlight
It's hard to believe how long their wings are . . .
Max, another bird finding machine.
Bo poining what turned out to be snipe
They're a lot easier to hit when they're on the ground.
Focused on the wrong bird.
That's better
My, what big eyes you have.
Tangled
Belive it or not, these last 2 were taken with a cell phone.

Incredible pictures DAP. If you shoot your 16's better than your Cannon, the birds are in big trouble come fall! Thanks for sharing. |

dap,
Every time I review your post I like the pictures even more! Shooting Woodcock with a camera can be very rewarding, think about taking those pictures when you are out with a hunting partner, actually gunning birds, you have a real talent.

Great photo essay!
IIRC a long time ago you posted some pics of grouse fan tails stacked perfectly IMO on another site that would rival anything I have I have ever seen before. Still sticks in my memory. And also that they were taken "back home" and wish I would have done that.
Best wishes to you and the pups that it continues for a long time to come yet for you all! |

Beautiful photos nice dog work! Always amazed at how easy the shots look at grouse and woodcock when you are not actually shooting at them! |

Saw these great photos at another site. Please describe your camera. Where these individual shots or taken from video? Gil |

Is this the grouse fan photo to which you referred?

I have a Canon EOS 70D camera with lens being a Sigma 120-300mm 1:2.8 DG. The pictures from it are all individual pictures, though I do have it set on "automatic" so that when I hold the shutter button down, it continues to snap pictures. I think 8-10 per second.
The last 2 photos were pulled from a video I took using an iPhone 6. |
