Today was my 9- and 11-year old boys’ first sporting clays shoot. It was in a chilly drizzle. 9-year old got about 10-12 out of 50, and older boy maybe 18-20. We had a super great time, laughed a lot, got the heck out, and just enjoyed ourselves. I congratulated them on their scores and explained that they did especially well, shooting modified-choked .410 pumps! First of many, many, many times, God willing. And we disinfected with Stroh 160!! They got a kick out of washing down with rum, let me tell you!

A GREAT day.

I went shooting today. A case of shells and my 1100 - 16. This place has some real 60 yard targets....lots of fun and you can actually stand on a peg, with a voice remote and shoot as many targets as you would like, off any trap on that parcour you would like....which is exactly what I did.

Yes, those are traps set out at over 70 yards away from the trap houses. The pegs are setup on the trap/skeet fields.

The targets are reset every two weeks, sometimes more often. There are no gimme targets anywhere. There are 4 parcours, 3 pegs on each parcour, 7 to 9 machines on each parcour. Voice release if you are shooting alone, that includes simo pairs. You can shoot the menu or not, your choice. A true practice situation.

Got this one this morning at 0630, watched him for at least a half hour in range. I could not see a beard. Ended up having a really thin wisp of one but nice 1 1/8 spurs. Shot him at 33 yards would have been easy for a 16 but I had my Gold as usual.

Today? It is a big day for me, been planning this since 1993.

I am sitting in a Holiday Inn in Winner, SD, with my year old GSP co-pilot Marty.

A bit nervous.....why? Gonna put a bid on a house today and finally make the move from Connecticut to South Dakota.

Just hoping everything goes right.

Wish me luck!!

Didn't set out to pick Winner, though I hunted there years ago. We basically picked a region Mitchell, Chamberlain, Yankton, Winner and drew a circle around it. We also looked at Aberdeen and the glacial lakes area.

We were looking for out of town, but not too far and a home that was on a few acres. That home ended up being near Winner, on 5 acres, about 8 miles outside town. It's on an oil road and the closest and only neighbor is about 1/4 mile down the road.

That area is also close to a small home we have in Nebraska, about 3 hours away and almost due south.

If this works out, it makes life very easy........and most importantly quiet.

Yeah, I love the land, it rolls and there are some beautiful views not too far away in Platte along the Missouri. I was on SD 44 crossing the river and 1995 came rushing back.

I am excited for sure for my wife and me. But I can't wait to get my son, his wife, my grandson and the rest of the family here and show them a completely different side of life and a different side of this country.

I remember taking my Dad to the Sandhills in Nebraska 2014....we were 15 minutes out of town he and looks at me and said, "Now I know why you want to come out here all the time".
