Shocking, very sorry for you.
Since this was posted here, I must make the obvious comment that something about this seems very wrong to me. This should never happen to a young dog. Yet I am sadly familiar with all manner of serious troubles coming out of training programs and this one raises my ire. But it wasn’t my dog so all I can offer is my sympathy and I will leave it at that.

Sorry to hear about your losing a dog with such promise. I get really close with my dogs so it is rough when you lose one that is like your own child. |

My other two dogs were trained by Ronnie Smith when they were located in Big Cabin, OK. It is a three month program and I would go down there often to work with them and my dogs. Never saw anything the least bit alarming about their operation, only the utmost in professionalism and concern for the dogs under their care. I've received copies of the vet's reports on the examination from Monday. Extremely elevated WBC and lab work looking for all the usual suspects including all the tick borne diseases. OK State vets are currently doing the necropsy and that should determine the cause. He was current on all vaccinations. With the current information I have, my only concern is that he had such a high revving motor and positive attitude, it might have masked the issue until he stopped eating. I should know more within 48 hours. |

My condolences to all who knew Rowdy.
From the loss of potential to the loss of a simple cold nose on days when that alone made him special are important and unfathomable losses, losses difficult to reason and accept.
I can not imagine that phone call....the shift of emotions, terrible.
Oh, my.
My friend lost a 3 1/2 year old setter at the end of last season.
The cause unknown but was either poison or, possibly now, related to Lyme and liver damage.
He hunted successfully with no symptoms of trouble at all on Friday, went down the next day and never saw Tuesday.
Take what comfort you can find in the shared experiences of dogs lost in all manner of ways and conditions by birdhunters and non-hunters alike.
Each dog and each situation was unique but the losses struck us all like a hammer blow to the heart.
Your tribute to Rowdy will be in remembering him....a true value found in sharing him with us....while we can never really know such a personal loss, we can understand.
Thank you...and, take "big steps and little 'uns" thru tough times. |

The initial report on the necropsy is that a major blood vessel ruptured and filled the chest cavity with blood. A grass awn is the likely suspect, but the vet has not found it yet. They will continue looking, but I would suspect the awn will be the answer. If not an awn, possibly a congenital defect. I will update as we learn more. Rowdy was not a large dog, weighing in at under 50 pounds and considerably shorter in stature than my two 70 pound older GSP's. It seems possible he would be more susceptible to grass awns down in the weeds than a taller dog. |
