To be 100% honest... you have money, treat yourself with a trip to a place that carries a lot of nice bird guns where you can actually view and handle them in person. You will know what you like when you find it. |

Do you have a bird dog? If so what breed? I might be a bit eccentric, but since I added my Drahthaar a few years ago, I’ve tended toward German guns. I say the dog should always get a vote!
Have you looked at any offerings from Chapuis? |

I've dropped in too many badger holes to carry a lot of these guns. |

Here is a really nice 16 ga shotgun with no evident warts except a wood extension that is quite well done. It is very hard to find an English 16 bore in much original condition. The only thing you could quip about is 26 1/2” barrels. It is also with a reputable dealer.

You need to select hammerless sidelocks and pan down to the 16’s and it is the first William Evans listed.
Good Hunting,

Chicago,
The Best Quality matched pair of Boss 16 gauge guns would definitely be something to own, very good recommendation. There are very few guns made as well as the Boss. However the early Purdey 16 that Ken Graft now owns is every bit as nice or may even be better. All depends on what he wants to spend his money on. There is also a #5 Grade L.C. Smith 16 gauge on GI that is some kind of sweet gun, 32" Barrels they want 15 grand for it. If you have the money there are still some real fine classic double guns to pick up.
Some of this comes down to a matter of taste and what a man likes to shoot.

Early 16 gauge Purdey guns with Hodges made breech are real hard to top.

Dave,
The gun I was suggesting is a William Evans 16 and is listed at $4,900 which is in keeping with the prices the OP had listed.
No doubt a pair of Boss side lever guns would be a nice addition for someones collection, but the ones you reference are 12 bores. If you want a fine Boss 16 side lever gun I know one that is available. It was made by John Robertson and engraved by James Sumner. It was shown in Donald Dallas’ book on Boss and I imagine it is an important Boss gun. The fellow is asking $29,000.
Good Hunting,
Mike |

Chicago,
The William Evans is definitely a fine 16 gauge gun, especially for the $4,900.
I was referencing the Boss guns because I believe them to be very high quality Best guns. I do like the cased pair very much.
However I would rather have a L.C. Smith #5 gun than the William Evans 16, just my preference, both are great guns. Course the #5 in 16 gauge will cost you about $15,000, not $5,000.

Working on acquiring another #5 1901 gun right now myself.
