Well, for third year in a row, dove season sucked. Shot 3 in the morning, 2 in the evening. Great sunflower fields this year compared to last. But just no doves, not just in the field I was in, but consensus from the shooting I heard nearby in other fields.
Not sure what is going on. Last year I get, weather was very abnormal, sunflowers were green as gourds and birds not feeding in them. BUt year before and this year have me at a loss. It used to be just finding the field that had good ripe sunflowers and some bare ground in it, now that seems to make no difference.
Of the 5 birds I cleaned, not one had a sunflower seed in them. Mostly weed seed, and one had corn from guessing nearby cow lot.
I might get another crack at some doves in two weeks, in the sandhills when I head out for chicken hunt. |

Hootch,
I have not Dove hunted in a long time, however we usually have a big flock of Doves here around my home in Murrysville, Pa and it is noisy because they are around. This year not one Dove any where, it does seem the Dove population is down in numbers, just why I am not sure.

We had a good shoot in southwest Missouri yesterday morning for the opener.
5 guys with limits, a girlfriend with 9, and my buddy the landowner/area social director was wandering around keeping birds moving for us all got a handful.
ole_270 (left side leaning on truck) shot his Dickinson 16 to fill his limit, so I guess that keeps this post relevant to the board. Most of us are meeting back Friday afternoon to try it again, I might take my Ithaca 37 in 16 this go 'round.

The dove opening for me just dredges up so many fond memories. The smell of dove weed still takes my mind to yesteryear. I was presented my first gun on my 8 th birthday some 63 years ago. My dad would pick me up early out of elementary school for the dove opening. So, I still go out on opening day with my winchester single shot 20 gauge for the ceremonious first day. I remember that I took that gun to my shop class in 1962 for refinishing the stock and bluing the gun. I doubt that work work these days. If I only take two doves for my GSP, I will relish making a new memory. I hope everyone has the fall of their dreams. |

It was a poor opener in West Central Ks. Six of us shot about 60 in two full days. |

last Dollar,
Glad to see Kansas is having a great Dove season! The 20 minute ride must be hard on you!
