Someone asked me recently if anyone has heard of a factory small compass installed in the comb of a sweet 16. He has one, and is wondering if it's factory. That seems highly unlikely to me, but it's worth asking. Anyone know of such an animal? |

UncleDan,
I agree with you it's highly unlikely it's an original part of the gun.

The needle will always point to the barrel & receiver, in case you lose them. |

but can they read a map???
Was out on a MI / National Parl service deer controll hunt, first year had a hhnter , "halloed" the tent @ 11PM, first night. Lit the colman up and showed my guad map to him and got him on his way to his camp about two miles.
Two days later was watching the morning drizzle stop and two other hunters came in and asked how far to the westcoast of the island?
Pulled the map and said you got two-thirds of the islant to cross. They were bush=whacking across the island and though they were there. Not by a LOONG shot theyr weren't. |

Unlikely to be factory but the stock compass is certainly a not uncommon touch of post WWII America.
Kinda of a neat touch, imo, right up there with sling swivels or Poly Choke-type ideas and I suspect an idea not wholly decorative or odd.
I can see one fitting sweet on a Savage Model 99.
A different time it was, with a different sense of esthetics.
Possibly, some of the stuff done to or added on to shotguns today may be looked at much differently in 60-70 years.
I know I question many must-haves or "how great"s now. |

Saw a guy today pass by my spot on the river fishing out of a kayak and he had a spinning reel upside down and was reeling it backwards, of course. Not sure we’re the “experts” who know more than they did in the 50’s , but lord those polychokes are hideous |

I have to admit to a bit of a love affair with Polychokes. Most don't like em and they lower prices but that's a bonus for us aesthetically challenged old farts. |

Betcha the original owner dinged the stock and decided to put the compass in there rather than look at that ding. |
