Anybody got a 16 GA load recipe for 1-1/8 ounce at 1425 FPS ?

Must be from a reliable source, and preferably using Alliant powder - as I've got a fair amount in my inventory.

If that is for a light gun, all I can think is OUCH!

...

I was out hunting this morning and was firing Federal 1-1/8 ounce loads that were marked 1425 FPS on the box (I double checked it as I couldn't believe it).

I was firing these through a New A5 Sweet 16 - and I was surprised how light the recoil was, either that or it was the like the old saying which goes, "you don't feel the recoil of shots fired at game."

I’m not by my notes but I got one that speed but came in over pressure with Fiochhi hull and primer longshot and a z16.

I would look at loads with Longshot powder. I suspect that you can get loads to that velocity.

1425 FPS is going to be tough achieve as I don't know of any data for that. Hodgdon had some at 1350 FPS, but the pressure is getting close to max.

If you really feel the need for 1425 FPS, I would start with a Cheddite hull, a Winchester 209 Primer and about 28 - 29 grains of Longshot and a Remington SP-16 wad and 1 1/8 oz. of shot and send it off to either Tom Armbrust or Precision Reloading for testing. But it is going to be iffy.

IMHO, I wouldn't spend the money or time. I would use the 1350 FPS data from Hodgdon. It wasn't the 1425 FPS that killed those birds, it was your ability to center the birds with your pattern.

I have reloaded a lot of different recipes, good, bad, and indifferent, but I would leave big boomer loads like that to the ammo manufacturers. They have access technology and materials that we don’t.

The Bluedot load listed on Alliant in a Federal hull goes about 1350 fps for me. I also suspect the pressure is much higher than what they have listed. I could be wrong. You won't get anywhere close to 1400 fps with Longshot. The only chance you would have would be an even slower powder. Maybe STEEL, or Lil' Gun, but I doubt you would find data for either. The 32gr blue dot load rocks you, I actually load mine down slightly.

I've got 1oz #3 steel going 1450fps, with pt1680 wad, cheddite hull, ch209, asteel powder.
I'd think you could get 1.125oz lead to 1450 with same components. I'd put styrofoam filler under the shot. Look at the.vp80 wadsheet for 400 gr steel loads for powder start points.

But... why would you want to? Lead carries its energy enough that you don't need to launch that fast... I doubt you'd see any rrange increase of tactical advantage for whatever target species. I'd be interested in hearing from the OP on why the speed... lead at 1350 will take the same time as steel at 1500 to reach most target ranges, so if it is a desire to keep same lead angles as steel, I don't think the math actually works out for most ranges and pellets...

Actually guys the old Spreadsheets showed about 4 loads with Longshot and Cheddite hulls that were 1400+ FPS. The highest I believe was 1470 loaded with 29 gr. I started at 24 but my velocity was considerably higher than the spreadsheet at 1380. I backed off until I was getting around 1275. Hope this helps.

Take a look at alliant 20/28. If i remember there are a few for 1-1/8. I much prefer 20/28 over longshot. But that is just me.

Cheddite 1-1/8 oz. Longshot 28.0 CCI 209M Rem SP-16 1419 10,900 Dogchaser 16 gauge forum

edit , I got this from the spread sheets that Oldhunter put together for us . After thinking about it, it doesn't look like a load that DC would put together because of possible powder migration issues .

Mark did you test this load ?
