1oz Shot 26.6gr IMR Blue W209 Rem SP16 7,200PSI 1,220fps
I loaded some of these today but used Alliant Blue Dot since the powders are interchangeable by weight. They make a very nice shot shell with the proper volume for fold crimp hulls. I reloaded some RST(Cheddite) hulls with this Hodgdon data.
I have a good quantity if the SP16 wads but never used them since I don't shoot 1 1/8oz 16ga shells. I'm pretty stoked to find this so thought I would share. |

Very promising load. 1 oz 2 1/2” loads are in high demand right now. I use a similar load with 800X but a sound alternative, and possibly superior load is always welcome nowadays.
Thanks

That looks like a great load. Is it a published load recipe or one you have had tested? I wonder how the SG16 wad would affect pressure, velocity, and the stack height with 1 oz of shot. I have more SG16 wads than the Rem SP16. |

It is published in the Hodgdon Load Data site.
The SG16 won't work in 2 1/2" hulls because it takes up more space. A load for the SG16 is also there but would work in 2 3/4". I think it is 200psi difference in pressure. |

Two Barrels,
If you substitute the SG16 for the SP16, the pressure will go up. Awhile back I had a similar thought using 800-X and had a load tested the pressure went up over 3,000 PSI. The original load was 9,800 PSI the tested load was 13,100 PSI.
Of course this was one test, so YMMV. Just use your head.
The only hull that substituting the SG16 for the SP16 may work in is the Remington. But Federal, Cheddite, RIO, etc hulls are going to produce much different ballisitics between the SP16 and the SG16 wads.
Dig a bit further into the Hodgdon data. |

I switched to using CCI 209M primer loads from W209. Getting a little better burn from the Blue.
Blue is not as clean burning as I had expected to see. Blue Dot and Blue are both similar burn. |

More than likely a little dirty because the pressure is not high enough for a clean burn . |

True on that. It would not ordinarily be my first choice of powder but the attributes of the shot weight, velocity, pressure for older guns and nicely reloaded shell make it desirable to me. I swab out my barrels after each day hunting so not a deal breaker. |
