Anyone have any experience trying to fit a metric primer (Rio) into a standard 209 primer pocket? Have had a few winchesters drop out of rio hulls, so leary about trying to jam a rio primer in standard hulls without slopping it out a bit.
Thanks

pheasant16,

Do not touch a primer pocket IF you are changing from a US made primer to a RIO primer. Simply reprime as with any other primer. The difference is only a matter of a few thousandths of an inch. You do not want to ream or expand the primer pocket on any hull.

If you want to resize the primer pocket smaller in the future, the tools by Precision Reloading and BPI work fine.

Totally...emphatically...forcefully...agree with MSM2019. Trouble awaits if one does otherwise. Rio hulls are excellent but require Rio primers. Even Cheddite primers will fall out of Rio hulls. But Rio primers can be squeezed into other hulls without needing to expand the pocket. Will that enlarge the primer pocket? Yes it can to a small
degree but a collet resizer can retighten the pocket somewhat.

All that being said, best to use like primers in like hulls.

Thanks Guys
Appreciate the advice.
Will take a few AA CF hulls and work the Rio primer in to see how it fits.
Glad to know we all travel the same road eventually.

My experience of forcing a oversize primer (european) into a hull with smaller primer pocket (US) seems to cause dishing of the head - result being that primer and primer pocket are then sitting away from breech face and striker hole.
Then have to press the head back to horizontal - not always very successful - or run the risk of misfires.
Make sure you check the head after forcing in a primer.

harkom,

It depends on the machine you use.

Some machines like MEC during the reprime step, support the basewad surrounding the primer pocket. This will not create a recessed primer.

Other machines hold the hull by the rim while repriming and don't support the basewad which can create a recessed primer.

If you use a MEC or similar machine and have recessed primers you have something else going on.

We are moving in two weeks and I was down clearing out the basement and found a Precision Reloading primer pocket tool - the one used to swage a larger primer pocket hole to fit the smaller diameter primer. I sold all my reloading gear two years ago in anticipation of this move and have no use for it.

It's yours if you want it - just send an email to me and I'll mail it to you.

MSM -

Thank you for the correction regarding dished heads. I based my comment on using a PW375 as well as various hand tools which did not provide support under the base wad from inside the hull.
