Purple patina? Is it a 31 or a 31L ?

My dad has a 31 20ga full choke. Very nice gun, extremely smooth! The regular ones are not heavy in the least bit.

I find a vast difference in what dealers on the internet and my local pawn shops ask for Model 31A or 31LA "Standard" Grades. I've gotten most of mine for less than $300. I much prefer the 1941 versions with the larger trigger group and better grip feel, though the Model 31A "Standard" Grades from introduction to 1936 did have nicely checkered grips and slide handles. In 1937 Remington introduced the Model 31AP "Standard" Grade with a plain stock and ringed slide handle --

and the old guns in inventory became Model 31AC "Standard" Grades --

Here are 1941 versions --

Model 31A "Standard" Grade with steel receiver below, and Model 31LA "Standard" Grade with Aeromet receiver above.

The Lightweight with the Aeromet receiver was introduced in 12-gauge in a 1941 folder --

but by the June 10, 1941, Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalog it says deliveries are indefinitely delayed due to raw material shortages --

After WW-II the Model 31LA was brought out in all three gauges. My Model 31LA 12-gauge in the picture above has a 30-inch full choke solid rib barrel, probably the heaviest Model 31 barrel, and it is a really muzzle heavy gun. I think the Model 31Ls would be at their best with a 26-inch plain barrel.

I have the Ithaca catalogs and Dealers Quotations for both 1935 and 1940. What grade NID?

If you like it and you want to shoot it, then it's a very good bargain at going market rates.

Looking at ebay, I see Cornell has repro'ed 1939 and 1941 and late 1936 but not the exact years 1935 and 1940.

Here is an original 1941 a few cents cheaper than the repros --
