I've been fighting a viral intestinal infection for a few weeks, but before it got me tied on a short tether to the closest porcelain throne, I did get the gun checked out for barrel regulation and bent for a 60/40 bird hunting pattern. My main shooting right now is field trialing and preserve birds, mainly bobwhite as that is what the wife wants to see coming home. I have Briley making me two new chokes to fill out the set, a Skeet and a Light Mod, as those are two of my favorites in the 16 ga. I plan on taking the gun out to the range and shooting some clays with it next week after the snow and ice clear a bit.

I did get the stock finish patched up to where it doesn't look too bad, but I'm debating on doing a more involved strip and refinish. When I took stock making under John Vest at Lasson Junior College, he taught that the lines of a stock should be straight lines or segments of a circle. This stock has dips, bumps, and waviness everywhere you look and I'm not sure it would be worth the effort to try to correct every shortcoming. One of the issues is a grip that is on the chubby side that would require a complete re-checkering to correct. I'm leaning toward just using it the way it is, and if I just fall in love with it, doing a new stock in the future. All the metal work is flawless, with the exception of using the double trigger guard on the single trigger and POW grip that banged my second finger bad enough to get me to put on my first trigger guard rubber bumper.

Thanks for the updates, guys. Sorry to hear about the health issues Riflemeister. Are you still in California? The Lassen Community College gunsmithing program is an excellent one!

I was born in California and spent the majority of my 33 year Naval career as a west coast sailor, but the Gray Davis governorship was the end of the road for me and California. I moved back to the Ozarks of Missouri 19 years ago and haven't set foot in California since. It's a pity, California is such a beautiful place.

Rifle Meister - isn't it a hoot the way some doubles mutilate that 2nd finger . The Davis does it - Char used to hand me a couple band aids upon arrival out West ! Even if I put my finger on the back barrel/trigger , it would always be the front one that went off and caused the yiker !

Reached out to the Upland Gun Company last week. They told me my .410 is in the engraving stage. They have a shipment of completed guns headed from Italy to the U.S. in March. Mine won’t be on it but they say it shouldn’t be too much longer. They have revised their advertised build time on their website from 3-4 months to under six months. Mine will be over the six-month revision even still. No complaints here — just an update.

What’s interesting is that the folks at Upland Gun Company receive or put together some sort of monthly status report on every gun on order. So a customer can call up — as I did — and find out exactly where your gun is and what stage of build or completion. Pretty neat, I think.

I had this exact same issue, and a gunsmith I knew a long time ago told me that this is caused by holding the gun incorrectly, compounded by a too-short LOP.

Basically if you are choking up on the grip and putting your hand too close to the back of the trigger guard, especially while holding the gun too loose, you're going to get your middle finger whacked.

I had this problem all the time with some of my old SxS guns, which all seem to have a too-short LOP for me. On my gunsmith's advice I put a slip-on recoil pad over the butt to increase the LOP.

Then I practiced holding the gun with my hand a little tighter and farther back on the grip and now (provided I remember to do everything right) no longer have this problem. I still forget about the second trigger at times now that I've grown accustomed to single trigger guns, but I don't get my finger banged up.

Unfortunately, the configuration of my new Upland Classic SXS pretty much dictates where the right hand grips the gun. In the picture below, notice how far forward the trigger shoe is in the large double trigger guard and how tightly the curve of the grip crowds the trigger guard. Also note the CSMC rubber bumper on the rear of the trigger guard.

Contrast that picture above with the picture below of my Wenig POW stocked Tri-Star Brittany. Note the smaller trigger guard, the trigger shoe situated much closer to the rear of the guard and the much more open grip. The Brittany has been my primary bird hunting gun for quite a while and is very comfortable to shoot.

My solution to saving the middle finger of my right hand was to get the CSMC rubber bumper with the spring steel attachment rather than the screw type. After placing the bumper on the gun, a natural grip places my second finger firmly against the rubber bumper and now there is no pain when firing the gun. I took my Atlas wobble trap to the range and shot about 40 rounds through the gun with no issues other than having to start out pre-mounted until I got familiar with the gun and then changing over to low gun. I think the RFM Upland Classic will work out just fine and have a place in my bird hunting SXS rotation.

I promised i would post some pics when I got it...just didn't think it would take 8 months! On top of that when I went to get the darned thing the registration got delayed so I got to drool over it for about an hour and then had to leave it there for a few days longer...kind of like going to the Shoe Show if you get my drift Wink
So far I'm pretty darned pleased. Fit and finish are nice and the measurements are pretty much spot on. Triggers break at just over 4 pounds and I expect those to soften a bit with some shooting. I ordered level 2 wood and I think it looks great. I kinda like the lighter look anyway. Scroll work is really nice and checkering is nice also. I can't really say anything bad about it except for the time it took to get it...and they didn't get my initials on it as ordered. Through the whole process they have been very upfront and have responded to all emails within a day or two including my email about the missing initials. I never called them though but i wouldn't expect any less given my experience. Here are some pics (I hope) so you can see it.
