I loaded up some shells today with the following:
1. federal Game (purple) hulls
2. fedral 209A primer
3. Universal clays 22.0 gr
4. BP SG16 wad
5. #6 nickel
I also put a felt 1/8" filler wad inside the SG16 to take up space as to facilitate a better crimp. Is putting that 1/8" felt under the shot alright to do? Could I even put two of them in there if I needed to? They are just 1/8" felt circles. They were a tight fit - but worked. These loads are said to get 1220FPS with about 8400psi which I thought would work great for chukar in the 16GA Sterlingworth. Could you also place the felt wad underneath the plastic wad instead? Also, does the felt work better as a filler than cardstock? |

You can space up a shot load with felt/cork/paper (others have used pinto beans ) with no ill effects on velocity or pressure. Don't put the felt under the wad and against the powder because it could 1.) disrupt the wad seal (unlikely though) and 2.) become lodged in the barrel (unlikely, but possible). If you must space the entire wad upwards, use a nitro card, but this may still cause gas sealing problems, depending on the diameter of the bore of the shotgun.

Save the Feds for 1 plus oz loads and no fillers----Go with the black Rems for lighter loads with fillers |
