This Darne is listed on GB. But it's a local gun to me.
Can someone shed some light on this shotgun for me?
Any info you can tell me would be great.
I don't even know what model it is. Thanks, Dave

I'm certainly no expert. I do have an R10 in 12 gauge and the one posted looks like an R model to me. Mine has no engraving and with the engraving it would be a higher grade R model, if in fact it is an R model.

Mr Schefelbein is the expert on Darnes and perhaps he will chime in with correct information.

Looks like the choke tubes and recoil pad are add ons.

Need more data on barrel and chamber condition.

Are the chamber inserts permanent or slip in and out?

What is the interior condition of the barrels and chamber (pitting)?

Who installed the choke tubes?

That one is a mess.

Poor quality restock (looks like Claro, the blank might have been worth more than the gun when they started) chamber sleeved to 20 gauge, I don’t like seeing that modification on a monobloc gun, as they were silver soldered, and barrel integrity is at risk, the serial number on the barrels doesn’t match the action, weird modification to the safety lever. That’s just what I can see. Some guy put a ton of money into it. Don’t be the guy that follows him.

Unless there is a government buy back program going on, there would be no reason to accept it gratis.

Best,
Ted

just wondering, where do you see the ser no? and on the bottom of the mono block, does it say Banons Darne? any clue to some of the other markings, I did see a 65, so short chambers? what does the 17.0 mean?

Ted. I hope Dave follows your advice. Being that Dave knows nothing about that type of shotgun , he should listen to the experience. Hammer Bill

17.0 is 16 gauge, expressed in metric. Picture 6 of 25 shows the underside of the opening lever, or, key, and the serial number on that part is H171. Picture 14 of 25 shows the barrel serial number as SS7.

Needless to say, these two numbers should match. They don’t.

The seller has just listed a similar R11, that has been very poorly converted to 444 Marlin. It has similar issues to this one, and, again, poor gunsmithing work. I think they would both be a bunch of trouble if they were cheap project guns (I’d never recommend a Darne or a Charlin as a project gun to begin with) and think anybody looking can do much better.

Best,
Ted

What Ted doesn't know about Darnes isn't worth knowing.

Listen to him.

we had one of these at a local shop a yr or two ago . Very interesting gun , but what really creeped me out in the end : when the action closed , I could never see the firing pins retract . No matter how close to breech . Only way to find out would be with primed cases , but the guy really wouldn't give it a shot .

If you can see the tips of the firing pins as the breech is open, the gun is broken. All Darne designs cock on opening. Does not sound like that was happening.

Best,
Ted

Ted/Ken .... yep they were stuck out all the way open and all the way closed - that I could see . I had no way of knowing if they caught up just as the action closed or what it might take to fix what was my perception ... very interesting gun otherwise !

I've dealt with this seller a few times, and he's a straight shooter. Not my gun, no connection to this auction, just passing it along here.
