Picked up a few game load 1x fired hulls. I have not ever attempted reloading these before. Anyone have data with primers other than the fed 209A & W-209. Those primers are currently hens teeth. I was surprised to see the wads for tapered hulls in a lot of data. These are straight walled hulls right? |

Will any of the euro primers fit? They seem to be more available |

I have been loading these mostly with Cheddite recipes for targets, 3/4 or 7/8 oz, <10k psi. They are both straight wall. I avoid recipes with SP-16 & Win (tapered) wads in these hulls.
I am on many reloads for these hulls, inspecting as I de-prime and culling as necessary.
Work fine, last long time. |

Yes, straight walled. FWIW; the only tapered 16ga hulls I know of are Actives and original comp formed Wins, both long out of production. All else are straight.
I have read and seen on test data that W209's can be swapped for Ched209/cx200's. Also in conversations with test tech's at PR, they agree with this practice. Both fit fine in Fed hulls.
Agree with being cautious about data using SP16's or Win/CB wads in those hulls, especially with fine grain powders. Simply pushing the wad in and seating can blow/push enough powder past the OB cup to diminish consistent performance. Flaring the Win/CB wad cups helps minimize this but I don't think it eliminates the issue. |

I did not think Activ were tapered, I’ll have to take a closer look at mine. I avoid Rem/Win/CB wad recipes in Activ as well.
Even with a SG16 wad, I see powder flakes occasionally come up past the seal when seating the wad in an Activ hull. |

I was hopeful to find a tested 7/8 oz load using these hulls. I was thinking maybe a SG-16S with Winn 572 powder with either Cheddiite or Noble Sport primers. A combination that produces a good column and finished crimp. |

Winchester 572, is not an ideal powder for 7/8 oz. loads in the 16, unless you increase the velocity to over 1,300 FPS. If you look at the Hodgdon data you won't find any 7/8 oz. 16 gauge loads.
Honestly, with Federal 2 3/4" hulls with 1 oz. of shot in the SG16 wad, you will get a fairly dished crimp. Winchester 572 is very dense. With 7/8 oz. with 572 and an SG16, that crimp will be crappy at best. Probably will need a 1/4" of filler to get a good crimp.
There are MUCH better 7/8 oz. loads out there. |

Appreciate the heads up on the 572. I will continue to search for the best combination, thanks. |

I also have gravitated to Fed hulls for 7/8 oz. They hold crimps well and don’t buckle. The composition basewad is more stable than some of the Euro hulls.
I cut them down to 2 1/2” and use SG16 wad. No dishing of crimps, perfect fit.
I don’t recommend my untested recipe for everyone but I load Red Dot to about 1200-1220 fps. It burns so clean, meters easily, mild recoil, no muzzle blast, what a great load. I use Cheddite, Fiocchi, and Nobel primers interchangeably. Also Fio but once you use them the pocket enlarges and you have to stay with them.
Red Dot is becoming very hard to find but I think you could get similar results with 700X, Clay Dot, Green dot, or other fast powders, just keep the velocities down around 1200 with 14-15 gr powder and 7/8 oz.

Found this data the spreadsheets that were emailed to me. I forgot what the color coding represented. This recipe was highlighted in orange. 7/8 - Green Dot -15.9 gr.
Ched-209 and SG-16 = 1200 fps/9980 psi. The notes has NC16 not sure what that means. |

I load 15 to 15.5 Green Dot SG16 wad 7/8 oz of shot and either WW209 or Cheddite. Nice mild target/Dove load. Kinda hard on bunnies to. UNTESTED! |

Pretty close. Do you need to add a nitro card to get a good crimp? |
