I know they existed back in the day. Anybody have a picture(s) or further reference?
Just wanting to be petty and rub a few noses in it elsewhere.
Thanks! |

I’ve found all kinds of references to it, both shells and guns, but can’t find pictures. And I think I’m a pretty good google-foo user. Might have to spend the rest of my workday perusing every shotgun forum… |

mickeys,
I remember the 16 gauge Peters 3" shells did you ever shoot any of them out of your L.C. Smith Long Ranger? My Grandfather used them for Goose hunting back in the day.
Good shells if you owned the right guns.
all the best,

Much rarer than the old 3-inch shells, the ammunition catalogs back in the day also offered 2 7/8-inch 12-, 16- and 20-gauge shells. I have seen 12-gauge --
and 20-gauge 2 7/8-inch shells --
but I haven't yet come across a box of 2 7/8-inch 16-gauge shells.
Back about 1901, Gaucho (Arthur W. Du Bray) the Parker Bros. salesman was travelling the southeast using a 2 7/8-inch 16-gauge and submitting regular columns to the sporting press.
It should be noted that back in the day our North American ammunition companies didn't put heavier payloads in these long shells than could be had in 2 3/4-inch shells, but the long shells got more/better wadding which many gun cranks considered advantageous. |
