I ran my dogs in a shoot to retrieve buddy hunt field trial Saturday; the last trial of this season. I ran the 2 year old Dan with my buddy Jerry's female EP and 13 year old Bode with my buddy Jim's 8 month old male GSP on their first field trial. I was shooting my RFM 16 ga on the good flying quail. Jerry and I were the only team to score the maximum of 110 points, with the next closest team not breaking 100. It was a great day with just enough wind to make scent condition good for the dogs, warming up to the upper 50's in the afternoon. The fields were muddy and standing water from the previous day's rain, but everyone had a great time anyway, and the dogs didn't seem to notice. 13 year old Bode made a fantastic 300 yard retrieve from out of bounds on a bird I got a puff of feathers from, but it kept on flying into a brushy fence line way out there. It was really heartwarming to see that ancient warrior flying around that field finding birds and making fantastic retrieves on what could possibly be the last hunt of his career.
