well yesterday we had the finale for the HS kids trap league . 8 schools with 85 shooters . Plus parents , g-parents , what a crowd ! Nobody in the club had ever seen such a gathering there at one time . Started setting up at 8AM and everyone was gone by 1:30 . The coaches had squadding pre-set , a group of cooks kept the dogs flowing , and maybe 10 of us to watch traps and reload birds . EVERTHING WENT PERFECT ! ... we have been working steady at having 4 traps and skeet set-ups and everything co-operated . Makes something like this easy . The kids are coming along so well and all the coaches were just beaming about their teams . Weather was perfect , blue sky background as opposed to the day before . Couldn't have been a better day !!!(actually had 105 kids!)

Isn't it nice when it all comes together?
The fun of seeing that 'over the hump' moment when the training and practice clicks into place for success is great!
Congrats!

Congrats 16gaDavis. You folks are doing a great thing. Keep up the good work.

Have you heard of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League? 350 schools and over 12,000 participants from grades 6 through 12. Every shooter is welcome to participate in the state tournament. So far it is mostly trap (more than 10,000 shooters) and skeet (about 2,000). Many kids shoot both trap and skeet. The league is also starting to shoot some sporting clays. I'd say about 20 to 30 percent of the shooters are girls. The state tournaments are genuinely huge events that go for days.

This league has really put a lot of shooting clubs on solid ground. Numbers of clay targets thrown at the clubs have risen considerably, with youth shooting, parents being brought into the shooting sports, and finally the fraction of shooters that stay in the sport after high school, or come back to it when they can afford it. It is so great to see this reasonable and fun attitude toward the shooting sports in a state that often evidences left-wing tendencies.

Anyway, 16gaDavis, thank you, and keep up the good work.

Max , funny you should mention this ... Have heard of the Minnesota gig , just haven't been able to follow numbers ! ... The NYS HS trap tourney is this wkend coming up . 6 yrs ago , a HS Sports director approached us about his school using our club for kids trap . At the time , there were only 4 schools statewide and they needed 5 to kick off the State shoot . He got just enough kids to make a team and cement the State deal . Has grown ever since and now is getting the Skeet thing going . Craig Parsons G-kid is high gun I believe for this past league , so we keep getting in deeper and deeper ! We are just soo lucky that somewhere in the past , they had the foresight to install 4 fields. was able to find all the parts thank god . Our nearby Loading Supplier has CVR stuff , so all good .... I was able to Ref a college tourney at one of our nearby clubs a few yrs back , even Reffed a team from Cal ! I get a really great warm feeling watching all this blossom !!

just saw an outline of the sched High School shooters for this past wkend . State Tourney . Looks like around 1200 shooters for combined Trap/Skeet . Trouble is each event was in opposite ends of the State . Buffalo area for skeet and Syracuse area for trap . IMPOSSIBLE scheduling . Not bad though for only having 5 teams and 50 shooters 6 yrs ago ... To make matters even more difficult , the JTH group had their big registered Skeet shoot here this wkend . (the Hessney auction group ) SSOOO , I'm sure there are some worn out kids/parents/G-parents here needing a break this week !!

Dave I would suspect that we just might have had our last trip to Moo back in 16 .

2002 - 2016 was a fun time in the Dakota's for all of us.

Hope your doing well , miss our visits.

Best Regards , Nick

High School trap shooting has spread like wildfire across Kansas in the last four years or so. I am an assistant coach for our school's team. I have been very impressed with the way the kids are serious and safe when shooting. Sure they joke around and raz each other when they're not on the line, but when they have the guns they are attentive and safe.

We have had 22 to 25 come out and actively participate each year, including several girls. The state tournament in June took two days to get everyone thru their 100 birds. Small rural schools to large schools participate.

We are fortunate to have our Pheasants Forever chapter furnish the range with two trap houses and help with the ammo & bird costs.

Trap is the only school sport in Kansas that can boast "no injuries".
