Good day all. I acquired 3 unopened jugs of Longshot, looking to use loading 1 ounce of #8s. I have Fed hulls, W/W cheapo hulls, Nobel Sport 688 primers, several kind of 1 oz wads. No printed recipes in Hodgen’s catalog. Looking for a 1200+/- Sporting clays load. Any suggestions? Loading on a MEC Sizemaster.

Not certain what W/W cheapo hulls are and equally uncertain about how well the NS primers are going to fit in them but if you go to Hodgdons reloading page and click on the shotgun tab then follow the drop prompts there are a bunch of recipes available.

Gonna assume that the hulls are Cheddite style Winchesters and that you have some Gualandi BRG 16/21 wads (TUWG2116 thru Precision Reloading or SG16 thru BPI).

No problem getting 1200+ FPS, but the issue could be that the GOOD loads will be around 1400 FPS. Longshot acts in the 16 the same way it does in the 12, it gives higher velocities, especially with the lighter loads.

IMHO save the Longshot for heavier hunting loads and find some Unigue, WSF, N320, Universal if you can find it, for the loads you want. You will also have a bit of trouble finding data for the NS688. I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle over that and treat them, in a target loads (not in heavy hunting loads) as Winchester 209's.

NobelSport 686's are similar to W209's. The 688 is a magnum primer, I believe. It's kind of like the difference between a Fiocchi 615 and a 616, or CCI 209 and 209M.

Fit?? I've had no problem whatsoever in fit and retention of NobelSport 209 primers in any hull. I think it's only the Fiocchi's that are a little on the big side -- I save Fiocchi's for Fiocchi hulls, and I can't seem to get 615's anymore, and mostly use 616's. I've loaded a lot of NS 686's, but I can't find them anymore. Like MSM2019 says, if you're using NS 688's in a target load, I wouldn't worry about it. I use a lot of 688's now in .410 (1/2 oz), 28 (3/4 oz), 20 (3/4 and 7/8 oz) and 12 (7/8, 1, and 1 1/8 oz) target loads -- just about any hull, too. I guess that means I must have been using them in 16 gauge loads of just about all types, too. In 16 I mostly load RGL's and Cheddites. I'll have to check my loading logs.

NS686 are mild, they aren't on a par with CCI209's when using certain powders. NS688's aren't like a CCI209M. Maybe with single base powders 688's come close, but they aren't much when it comes to double base powders, especially flattened ball powders like Longshot. They may do OK at 70 degrees and hotter, but they will not produce great ballistics in cold weather with the slower burning double base powders. They will go bang, but run them in a load over a chronograph at 20 degrees, in all likelihood it won't be good.

Over a year ago another member here shared with me his factory correspondence from Nobelsport. The 688 was designed to be a replacement for the WIN 209. The 686 is milder. I think the diameter is slightly larger though. There is a chart floating around somewhere showing primer diameters.
