What shotgun will you be using for the 1st of September?

Our tradition is to use a 410 but this year that might change
as the DRY weather has limited our hunting areas

I take several guns and dove hunt 3-4 days. This year I’ll take a 16 ga wingmaster, Rizinni SXS 20 ga, Benelli Legacy 20 ga, and Rem 1100 28 ga. I just enjoy shooting different guns. I will shoot all of these and will decide which one(s) to shoot on any given hunt, depending on where we hunt.
I hunt in west central Ks. It’s been quite dry there and water sources are extremely scarce. However, I have access to two different small ponds that should be swarming with doves.
The 16 ga wingmaster is an early 1970s gun that I just picked up. It’s a 26”, IC, vent rib gun. It should be a great dove killer.

No doubt about it: The 16 x 8mm JRS combination gun. An ounce of 7 1/2 for the occasional dove, over 2800 ft lbs muzzle energy for the tough black bears out here. Grouse will be in season on the 15th and bear are already open. They travel the same logging trails and timber areas. And dare I forget cougar; the forests here are thick with them nowadays and the season is open. We’ll be ready for any and all.

I'll probably haul my 1939 A H Fox Special 30" barreled 16 ga out of the safe for the dove opener.

Ive never gone dove hunting but Ive already started the same agonizing over which guns to take to the MT prairies next month. Laughing

Remington 870, .410 bore with modified choke and whatever I have left in my meager supply of shells.
BTW, what is that all about? I can get turkey, self defense, and buckshot but no bird shot.
Had to order some BOSS for WMA shooting.

Agonizing between the Rem. 1148 or the Fox Sterlingworth, using bismuth.

The 1148 has been opened up to light mod, the Fox has IC and mod.

It's the unofficial opening of hunting season for me, although usually as hot as blazes in Indiana.

Not much going on in September here in Pa, Grouse & Woodcock season starts in the weekend of October 15th. The L.C. Smith 16 gauge Silver Breech usually gets used opening day, along with the 1800's J.P. Sauer Grouse gun. I like to start opening day off right.

I have a Citori White Lightning (a new acquisition) that I am going to restock with a 525 stock (same as I am doing with the Hunter). If I can get it done by the 1st, I will take it. Of course, both Citoris are 16's.

Other wise, it will be one of my Ithaca 37 16ga guns as I have a stock that I reworked a few years ago that I can hold onto.

Due to the White Lightning having such an open grip curve, I can't grip the stock, however we got such a super deal on a gun that had hardly been fired (maybe a couple times) that we had to take it home.

that date is squirrels only here in NY -probably a 28ga ... early Geese opens then , depends on if any birds around - that'll be a 16ga !

Squirrel and Dove open here on the 1st in Ohio. However, I am not going into the woods until we have a frost and some of the leaves and such are knocked down.

I will hit the areas the ODNR mow and brush hog for Dove.

My brother-in-law was infected with Lyme disease sitting on the porch, or walking in the yard. He didn't know he was bit by a tick. He was very very sick and was put into the hospital with it. This was down in the Salt Fork area.

My wife's cousin was bit by a tick and caught Lyme in Pa mowing her yard. They live in a "manicured HOA" type of place. No woods or trees, just grass.

It seems Lyme and other tick born diseases are getting much more prevalent and wide spread.

Great looking Auto 5 and case! I wish I had a place to go for the dove opener here, but I just don't anymore. All my past "locations" have been either overrun or lost (mostly to development). When I finally get "fully retired", I guess I'll have to develop some new spots as I've got several good gun options I'd like to employ for that (from .410 to 12 bore).
