I hadn't shot any of my 3 pump guns for sporting clays for quite a few years. A couple of Tuesday nights ago, a friend thought it would be fun to shoot our pumps at sporting clays, since we had finished up the sporting clays league.

This Tuesday 8/22 I took my Model 37, with the 28" barrel and modified choke, using some 7/8 oz. loads and had a blast. I forgot just how much fun they can be and I didn't shoot it half bad.

Just a reminder to anyone else with a pump gun sitting in the gun safe.

I have an older, built in 1916, original Model 12 field grade with a full choke, with a 2 9/16" chamber. If I had more ammo loaded for it (it's my only short chambered shotgun) it would have gotten to go!!

I still have a few laying around. One up at grouse camp (for rainy days).

I still have an old M12 that I use on super wet rainey days and for a Camp security gun. Picked the gun up about 8 years ago and had the full choke opened to IC for Grouse & Woodcock hunting. The girls love the old gun because it is so light to carry in the woods. With the light RST SpredR shells the girls think they are Annie Oakley.

My mother-in-law carries a 1913 M12 20 gauge I redid a few years ago, and I have an early (1927) 16 that was another basket-case that I also recently resurrected (~2-years ago). Someone had fired steel through it's full choke, 28-inch tube, cracking the last inch or so. It's now cut back to 26 1/2 inches (~light modified). While assembling the rest of it, I also discoved that the ejection port had been opened as well, so it now shoots (& ejects) 2 3/4 inch shells. Light & efficient! Six pounds nothing for both of them.

This is the first year I used anything BUT a pump to shoot sporting clays.😬. It’s all I owned for a long time. My friend used his 12 Gauge 37 with no recoil pad 2 years ago. He was well bruised. 3 years ago I entered a charity shoot with my pump and 2 of the 4 man team didn’t show up. So we each shot for 2 people that morning. 200 rounds through a pump. It was Awesome! Being how I’m left eye dominant but feel more comfortable shooting right handed, I shot one round right handed and one left.

I shoot a browning citori lightening in 16 ga for trap usually, before, I used a Ithaca 37 but it could not handle shooting four rounds of trap every week, but took it out for old times sake and shot a round, good time, but did feel it in my shoulder even with a limbsaver butt pad.

While I have a lot of choices and usually use my 391 on our annual crane hunt I am switching to my newly acquired BPS in honor of the former hunting buddy who had a stroke and cannot join us this year at age 91. This was his gun used on this hunt for several years.

Nice reference Skeettx to M12 Skeet gun. I find that M12 almost pump themselves in rapid firing situation. The foreend comes back with the recoil and then cycles back to battery as the body recovers from the recoil. I haven’t experienced this with M37 or Mossberg 500, and don’t know whether this is standard with M12s or mine have been shot loose.

I stumbled on to a 870 wingmaster in 16 ga about two months ago. It’s a 1972 version, checkered wood, 26” IC, with a rib, in vg shape.I’ll try to swat a few doves with it on Friday.

Timely post Mark,I'm taking my 1948 Ithaca 37 16ga out for SC today to see if it should be one of the guns going to MT next month for Sharps and Huns.
