Here’s something from a couple days ago. There are at least five, and possibly more grouse in the photo. They let me walk up. Guess how many I got. And why.

OK, I'll play...
None, because the James Bond style gatling gun behind the revolving front license plate jammed? |

Wow, a banner year, even out west. I actually experienced a similar situation this year as well. One is usually certain, two is a good possibility, maybe even three (if you're using a repeater). You can also occasionally get a "two with one-shot" situation as well, so accordingly the end-number goes up. If they're really stupid (which sadly... can happen to the young birds-of-the-year that haven't begun to disperse) you could theoretically shoot your limit of 5 birds at that point (the legal limit in Minnesota). I got 3 when it happened to me this year, with one re-load. The rest either ran for cover or flew off. Made for a short day.
Young birds can be quite foolish...

This bird was safe, however, as we don't shoot the local "pets". |

Waggo71 gets partial credit. None is the correct answer.
Why, anyone?

Gun was in hand, locked loaded and fired. But after all these seasons, still fell victim to the common rookie mistake: Covey shooting. All but one flushed at once in a tight group the same direction down the road. Didn’t pick out a bird. And the closest bird sat there and watched as I missed the others. Then it flew as I fumbled for another shell in the upper of the 16x8mm combo gun.
First time I’ve seen ruffed and spruce grouse mingling together. There was strutting, displaying, and fighting going on amongst the various avian cousins as I watched from inside the vehicle. Fascinating.
I couldn’t resist stepping out to take a shot but they all made a clean escape.

The old abandoned logging railroad has some nice grouse cover. We hunted it a couple times this past week. However, something else was also down there hunting.

Rifelmeister,
Lots of members are out hunting right now, including me. Was not able to post as I usually do. The sight is working well however!
all the best,

A few years back myself and a friend were out big game hunting but had our shotguns along. As we drove down an old logging road, we spotted a few ruffed grouse in the road, so I bailed out and swatted one as it took off. We hadn't seen the 10-15 birds sitting in the tall grass along the road or in an elderberry tree just off the road, at first. When I shot one or two more took off, which I missed and my friend jumped out of the vehicle, grabbed his shotgun and a few more flew down the road. He missed a couple of fat shots, I missed a couple of fat shots, we both reloaded and I managed to dump another and then he and I both missed a few more fat shots and then the excitement was over. I ended up two for 6-8 shots, he went zero for 4-5 shots...most all nice straight away shots as they flushed down the road. Can't say that either of us had anything to brag about with our shooting and I've had that happen with blue grouse, where we didn't lift a feather, although I have a good excuse. I was with my older brother and a couple of his friends and I was a year or two, too young to buy a hunting license! I figured at the time, if only I had a shotgun, we'd have a few birds in the bag....yeah right! |
