I can use lead shot or non-tox here in Michigan.

If .410 for turkeys, make it TSS #9’s and pattern it with the Full choke |

I wouldn't even consider anything but TSS. |

this is one of my to do things but is way back in the folder ! I have a Mossburg 410 bolt gun with the original screw on choke device . Mine being Mod . I've half heartedly looked for a full , but have never had a bite . This would make a great candidate for this project !! |

They indicated for the TSS, to use a extended sporting clays tube with a open choke ,
as the TSS will respond like have a 2X tighter choke??
Recalled that Winchester / Olin indicated a load of 3", .410 using 7-1/2 shot had a decent pattern and dense up to 35 yards??

My then 8/9/10 year old boy, 3 years in a row, killed 10" bearded Tom's using a single shot .410 with #9 TSS.
I'll admit the first one required a second shot as he hit it bad.
The next two were stone dead.
And admittedly, the 3rd one could have been killed with a .410 loaded with milk soaked cheerio's, it was pretty close.... |

Thanks PC-
His 3rd bird at 10. Check out the spurs
His second at 9posed the pic in his great great grandpas old box car on the farm, where my dad lives today.
First bird at 8. Man time is flying, I thought he was 9.
He thought turkey hunting was easy. Go to grandpas. Shoot a bird. The last 2 years have been humbling…. |

I’m a 12 gauge kind of guy when it comes to turkey hunting, but if it takes a .410 application to get a young hunter involved. I’m all for it! I’m still on the sidelines for the .410 route but I admit that losing 4-6 lbs. of tote weight on a mountain gobbler sounds wonderful.

Nothing better than pictures when one is little to look back on , keep calling birds in while teaching the call to the younger hunters.
Remember shooting , hunting and everything else is a compromise , cylinder bore .410 is very effective on turkey with all size of lead shot at the correct range , get closer.
That old Schilling 16 bore had not a sign of a choke but look how many turkey , duck and goose I shot with the thing with 3/4 oz of # 9's .
Don't shoot at things one thinks one can hit , shoot at things one thinks one can kill.
Regards Nick |
