I've got an adventure in mind and it would be comforting to have a rifle along for things too. I've never owned a Germanic gun before but I've always thought the 3-barreled guns were pretty neat. Any things I should be looking out for? This one's 16x16x9.3x72R. |

Yes, why wreck a good bird hunt by
shooting a deer
I do have and use a Krieghoff Drilling in 16 x 16 8x57IR but do not load the
rifle barrel when bird hunting as the side safety and barrel selector confuse me in the heat of the moment.

A gun for all the seasons in Texas, eh? Actually, deer aren't the mild concern here, wolves are however. |

Yes.
Mine is my November gun in Maine. Everything from squirrels and grouse to deer and bear are in open season that month. 16x16 x 8x57R and I'm set for anything.
Like Skeettx suggested, watch the side safety. Chances are, if you're in the middle of a bird hunt and a deer shows up you'll have enough time to break it open and load a rifle cartridge. |

If the drilling controls are too involved, try a combination gun, 16 / 8mm. Safety/barrel selector works just like a Citori. And yes, there will be a live cartridge in both barrels. You never know what will be around the corner on the old logging trails. I usually have upper barrel (16 ga) selected. Perfect for early season hunting.

Just curious, because I saw a beautiful Drilling the other day, SxS 16 over some Euro rifle caliber -
Are these European rifle calibers readily available somewhere, or do those of you that use them have to load your own? Like I said, I'm just curious because I don't own one and so have never tried to source Euro rifle calibers. |

Go back and verify the rifle caliber. Some are more common than others. If it is an older gun, be aware that you need a knowlegable 'Smith to look at it. The list of things to be aware of is lengthy, but start with action tightness, stock cracks, and bore condition. |

Euro rifle caliber markings can be ambiguous. Took the 16x8mm to a gunsmith who did a chamber casting to positively identify 8x57JRS caliber, which is one of the modern (i.e., hotter) chamberings. Barrel stamping merely said “16 . 8”. There are multiple flavors of 8mm, some of which differ by only a couple thousandths but the pressure specs are significantly different.

You may want to look up “T&G Save the fine guns” for info or purchase of a drilling. They have an active community for purchase of German drillings and ammo. |
