Shot the only two I ran across today. I used my 12 gauge today for something different.

Wow you had sun?? It's been cloudy and snowing on and off today.

I.gave Marty the day off. We will.get back to it on Tuesday.

A 12 gauge is cheating not to mention you broke the 16 gauge oath.

🤣🤣

I think the 16 gauge gods punished me for carrying the 12. I didn’t see many birds and put on a lot of miles

Today I went to a place that is in PLOTS, and there was someone there (first time all year I've had that happen). Thankfully, the guy was hunting where everyone else does and wasn't anywhere near the slough that you can't see unless you walk to it, which is about a mile away.

I went to my backup place, shot a rooster in a spot where there is usually an explosion of birds that you never get close to, so that was a win......and then Marty found a porky. He only had about a dozen or so quills in the front of his mouth, I got most of them out with my multi-tool, but off to the Vet, to extract the last 3 that I didn't want to chance breaking off. That went easy enough.

End of the day!!

I hope the weather folks are wrong about the snow coming in tomorrow and Thursday.

Poor Marty. I haven’t seen a prickly critters yet this year. Just checked the forecast. Don’t mind the snow but it’s going to make accessing my spots a little bit harder if we get the high winds.

DAVE IN MAINE:

Congratulations on the moose, and maybe more importantly, the planning and executing the expedition, including the handling and packing of the meat, well done.

It sounds like you did some good shooting and the 8x57 performed extremely well, what ammo did you use? I have one in the underbarrel of my 16x8 mm but haven’t taken a deer with it yet, only grouse so far.

Cheers and Bon Apetit,
B.

RE:Moose hunting- Washington state has some moose- 40 years ago they had 3 tags in the drawing and the herds have expanded now that there are 40 or so tags. Still a couple hundred to one odds- but reading Dave in Maine's post I may start applying again. If I got one I'd consider using a 1910 Rigby 470 NE, cast with slightly reduced loads- after all, I'm not looking to shoot an elephant with it. I'm sure the game agent would be surprised.

To answer a couple questions:
Brewster: I used my drilling, which is chambered in 8x57JRS. The ammo was Sellier & Bellot, 196 grain PSPCE, their "Pointed soft Point Cutting edge" round. My drilling likes that ammo a lot. Off the bench it will string holes at 100 yards if I do my part.

AmericanMeet: You can't win the lottery if you're not in it. I was in the lottery for 11 years before I got drawn. Maine's lottery gives you points for each year you are not drawn: 1 point per year for years 1-5, 2 per year for years 6-10, 3 per year for years 11-15. I had 15 points.

As to calibers ....

My subpermittee took a moose in 2016. He was quite surprised when he was drawn for a bull hunt in the early season this year. He only had 9 points. He did not score, a sad story. He was lining up on the bull of a lifetime when his son/subpermittee opened the driver's door on the truck to get out and back up, only to have the damned bell that tells you your keys are in the ignition start ringing. The moose bolted and that was the only live moose we saw all week.

On my hunt, my subpermittee was using a proven moose-killing gun, the same one he used in 2016. It was an 1880-vintage cape gun chambered in 11.5 x 57R /16ga. He would have shot a 395 grain cast bullet, same load he used in 2016. It's basically a 45-70. He likes old guns, especially if he can get them cheap because they need work. For his cape gun (bought for a song) he had to make a new hammer (the rifle barrel's hammer had gone missing), then had to cerrosafe the chamber, get dies and make his own cases.

I was there in 2016 for his hunt and he dropped his moose in its tracks with an offhand shot at about 90 yards - spine shot which shut down his moose's back end. He used the 16 ga with a home-cast round ball to finish things. (The Power of Purple!)

On another moose hunt in 2008 or 2009 the same friend - he was subpermittee for his wife's tag - used an old 577/450 on a Martini action, again with home-cast bullets. He tried for a neck shot but it went a little high and off to the side. Dropped the moose immediately when it went in the ear.

A young gunsmith of my acquaintance used a 458 Win Mag a few years ago for his moose. I think that could be seen as a bit of overkill.

Remember, my subpermittee was using cast bullets. You can't push cast bullets more than about 1600-1700 fps. He is of the school that says a big bullet making a big hole will do damage and stop the animal better than a fast bullet - that might not expand fully or might fragment - making a small hole.
Another local friend, who took a number of moose while stationed in Alaska, once emptied his 270 into a bull and had to reload before #6 stopped things. Jack O'Connor and the 130 grain bullet didn't do that friend any favors.

So - using the 470NE is, in my opinion, a very sane choice. And using a Rigby is the kind of class I would think the Red Gods would smile upon.

Didn't get out this fall as much as I'd hoped. I did have a great chukar hunt in eastern Oregon though, and if the weather clears, I hope to get out a couple more times by the time the season ends Jan. 31st.

Here's a great day using a Husqvarna 42 16 hammer gun I picked up. Took half a dozen birds with it first weekend out. Funny how my setter doesn't want to be bothered with taking pics. He just wants to keep hunting Laughing

Saw this bruiser near camp. Maybe I should try to draw a tag there next year!

More hammer gun fun. I just sold this gun, a great shooting Belgian 16:

Will be finishing my C10 truck restoration this spring, so I decided to get another Dickinson Estate 16, this time with 26" barrels. Took it to the trap range an hour after I got it and shot a 22 the first round. Not too shabby. They are great shooters. Such a great value for $1600. It has boring wood, but that gives me an excuse to do a full custom treatment that I've had in mind for this next offseason. I love hammer guns, but it's good to have at least one modern gun in the safe you can shoot anything in and don't have to reload for, or when you're hunting with other people Very Happy
