I've been notoriously absent around here, but life has been complicated the past two years, especially at the end of last season, 2023-24. I just wasn't in a situation where I felt like doing my annual end of season photo torrent. It is pretty time consuming. I do however plan on doing so this year when the restless period sets in (after bird seasons), in a few weeks. Some of these photos can be seen over at BorderCollieBirdChaser on Facebook or Instagram-a new page I've set up for outdoor content; yes it is public. Here is a sample photo, from yesterday's chukar hunt. Enjoy!

Great photos, and just curious Wyo, how do you rate sharptails and chukar for dining fare? I presume they are vastly preferable to late season snowshoes which have gone cannibalistic or retromingent.

Worst meal I ever ate was snowshoe hare...but I was a teenager and Mom might have sabotaged it so I wouldn't bring any more home!

Chukars are superb.

Sharptails are either mediocre or outstanding depending on what you do with them. My favorite recipe, for any dark meat grouse, is to dice the meat, brown it, then slow cook it in a crockpot with Beefy Mushroom soup all day. Serve that over rice or some sort of pasta/noodle and you'll eat till you bust.

That's why I love this forum, all the things that I learn here.

I thought I knew a lot about wildlife, but I didn't know what "retromingent" was.

Webster online says, noun, "an animal that urinates backwards".

Other online sources use it as an adjective "in a derogatory manner".

And I got a great new recipe from WyoChukar for prairie grouse or spruce grouse.

For any dark meat grouse, is to dice the meat, brown it, then slow cook it in a crockpot with Beefy Mushroom soup all day. Serve that over rice or some sort of pasta/noodle and you'll eat till you bust.

The recipe probably work for those late season retromingent snowshoe hares too.

Just got off a call from a friend about his “life complications”. You were missed here (& your photos). Hope this means the complications have mitigated and life is better.

Fourtown, retromingent is a term sometimes used to describe creatures that eat their own excrement, as snowshoes do in late winter when food is scarce. It may also be a defense mechanism, as they become inedible at that point as noted by Wyo.

Snowshoe hares are odd creatures. In the summertime they will dance and frolic around the campfire seemingly for the purpose of entertaining the campers and onlookers.

And a final query for Wyo: What about snows and blues?
