I am looking for 16 gauge waxed or lubed edge card and fiber wads. Anybody know where to get these. Specifically looking for wads that are good with smokeless powders.
I know that Precision and Ballistics have Butler Circle Fly wads, not interested.
Not really interested in a DIY project, unless I absolutely have to.
I don't want cork or felt wads.
I know I am being fussy. |

How many and how thick? Have a box and half of these but not sure of black powder compatibility.

| The waxed hard cards from BP work well for me in my 16ga. I am using the Alcan wads from Precision Reloading for my 28ga and they are great. |

Byron,
Yeah I liked all the Alcan stuff too and used it up many years ago in my 12 gauge guns. Now I'd like to use card and fiber wads for some hunting applications. I've got the Gualandi 16 gauge data for Vihtavuori powders using card and fiber wads. A guy over on SGW sent me information on good wads made in the UK. The problem is the company won't ship outside the UK.
So the search goes on. |

| What is wrong with the BP wads? I’ve used BP and Alcan and don’t see much if any difference in them? More info would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

Question for fiber wad users: They sound great, but how to prevent lead barrel fouling?
TIA

If you ever do get lead barrel fouling, Pure Gum Turpentine (has to be the real stuff) will help lift the lead out. I use it to remove lead from my BPCR barrels. I have seen BPCR barrels lead so bad out on the edge of the desert that a wad pounded through the barrel brought out strips over an inch long.
BPCR barrels can lead really bad in hot dry climates, or if the lube fails on long strings of shooting (ie: a competition). This is why a lot of folks have gone back to paper patch and wiping between shots. You would be amazed at the contraptions people come up with to deal with leading and to prevent it, along with BP powder fouling. |

Why not BP (I assume Ballistics Products)? I have used the Butler Circle Fly wads that they sell and now own. Those wads left a LOT of lead in two different shotgun barrels that I used them in, because they are not lubed. BPI has something they call card wads that are very thick and lubed, maybe they are good maybe they aren't.
Finally, I have had their loading manuals, which are junk, had some words with the owner and I only buy from them when I absolutely have to. This isn't an absolutely have to situation. |

A 16 gauge 1 1/8 oz card and fiber Bismuth buffered load at 1200-1250 would be a gift from the God's to waterfowlers!! |

MSM2019, glad you can use them, proposing some horse trading, check PM.
Ohio Wirehair, that would not be too difficult to do. Plenty of "stacked" loads smattered throughout the spread sheets + MSM2019 shared an outstanding 1.125 bis "stacked" load in the past that with a little creativity (and some testing) swapping NC'c & fiber or felt would get you your gift load.
Are you looking toward environmentally friendly in that gift load/idea or what else?
FWIW, I've found in a couple of my tested loads when only swapping a NC for a plastic over powder gas seal, all else equal, yielded reduced pressure and kept all other tested data point factors nearly identical. |

| I bought unwaxed fiber wads and made a mixture of wax to coat them. They worked well. But, I made a mistake of keeping the ammo in my hot barn through a summer. The wax melted down into the powder and they were duds and obviously did not fire. Just a heads up about using the proper wax mix and not storing in a hot site. |

Agree, I have not noticed any difference while cleaning compared to plastic wad loads.
I had several Bismuth fiber wad loads tested and the data is over on the low pressure group. As I recall they were 15/16 and 1oz loads. A solution for the rare trip to hunt roosters and a just-in-case the world gets even more crazy that it continues to be and they ban lead for all hunting. Those Bismuth loads result in more barrel cleaning than normal but nothing of concern beyond a half dozen more times running the cleaning rod down the barrels.
The pattern board shows fiber loads are more responsive to true choke pattern expectations compared to plastic wads which show less pattern difference to different choke. YMMV. |
